Janus is a German music project by Dirk Riegert and Toby Hahn. Its name is borrowed from the two-faced god Janus of Roman mythology , who is considered the ruler of the door and gate.

history

From the beginning Janus consisted of only two musicians - Dirk “Rig” Riegert, who takes care of the lyrics and the vocals, and Tobias “Toby” Hahn, who owned the in-house night shift studio and who was responsible for the piano and programming responsible is. Both band members are not full-time musicians. While Hahn's main activity was initially a producer and thus remained close to the profession of musician, Riegert works as a game designer , most recently involved in Anno 2070 . Tobias Hahn is now managing director of the family company Glasbau Hahn.

Janus' albums have been recorded with numerous guest musicians, including an entire orchestra. While the debut album Vater did not get beyond the status of an insider tip despite positive reviews, Janus was able to quickly increase their level of awareness in the alternative and black scene with the following releases .

Between 2007 and 2011 there was next to no news from Janus. There was no announcement of the band's breakup or that work on the planned re-release of the album Schlafendehund was stopped or continued. In May 2011 there was an interview in which the band on the one hand confirmed the continuation of the project, on the other hand dampened the hope of new releases soon. In May 2013 Janus announced that the work on Sleeping Dogs deluxe had resumed and the album should be available in the fourth quarter of 2013. The linen-bound 4CD album was released on July 1, 2014. In addition to the two releases Schlafendehund and Hundstage , which were extensively remastered, a new piece was also released: With empty hands .

The next recordings in the series of re-releases were Resurrection and Kleine Ängste Deluxe , both released in February 2017. While there were hardly any changes to Resurrection compared to the out-of-print first editions , Kleine Ängste Deluxe has been heavily revised. This includes the pieces from the bonus CD from the album Resurrection and the audio book from 2004. In addition to a prepared artwork, Kleine Ängste Deluxe also contained four other chapters of the audio book. In contrast to the original chapters, singer Dirk Riegert spoke this himself.

In October 2017 a new album called Ein schwacher Solst was released, which contains 10 completely new songs. The aim is a small consolation only bridge the waiting time for the really new album, which is being worked on since, 2015. Little consolation contains pieces that would not have suited the new album.

style

The music style can be assigned to the New German Hardship . Rock-oriented pieces are often replaced by calm ballads that are accompanied by acoustic instruments. In addition, influences are from other styles, such as drum and bass ( "broken face"), electro , trip-hop ( "Come down"), pop , German rock , tango ( "Paula's Game"), but also numerous film music -inspired elements.

The German lyrics are about human emotions such as hatred, sadness, despair, madness, fears and love.

Live they give both technology-assisted concerts and classical concert evenings in a festive atmosphere without any technology. They are usually supported by guest musicians who often play the instruments for the albums, but are not officially part of the band.
