Illuminate is a band from Karlsruhe , which was founded in 1993 by Johannes Berthold.

history

The line-up of the band changed several times, especially the female vocals have been sung by different singers over the years. The current line-up consists of Johannes Berthold, who, as the band's mastermind, is responsible for song writing, male vocals and electronically recorded instruments , Sylvia Berthold (vocals and song writing), Mareike Makosch (vocals), Fenja Makosch (Vocals), Jörn Langenfeld ( guitar ), and Johannes Knees ( keyboard ). One of the greatest successes was the fourth place for the song Dunkellicht in the German Alternative Charts 2000.

The name of the band is derived from the Latin word for "full of light, radiant" and has no relation to the secret society of the Illuminati .

Drummer Stefan Dittrich, who previously played with Mystic Prophecy, took over the role of drummer after Mathias Kurth left the band in 2009.

style

Typical of Illuminate are the melodies carried by the piano and the duets, often sung in contrast, based on male and female singing. Pop , rock and Schlager elements were increasingly incorporated into the later albums . The songs deal with topics such as love , loss, longings and transience .

Some of the early recordings are mentioned in connection with the New German Death Art , including songs such as Jungfrauenquelle (1993), which correspond to the musical zeitgeist of the time. Some of these recordings appeared on the 2009 compilation album Splitter . For the regular albums, however, this association is no longer justified. The band itself allocates only their debut expiration of NDT.

“I find that our music is not as dark as it is often portrayed. Illuminates stand out from the field of New German Death Art in precisely this respect, perhaps with the exception of 'Decay'. We rather stand for affirmation of life. "
