John Tardy Live

Obituary ( . English for, obituary ';, obituary') is a death metal - band , the 1984 in Brandon (Florida) was founded. She is one of the most important and influential representatives of Florida Death Metal .

Band history

Foundation phase

In 1984 the brothers Donald (born January 28, 1970) and John Tardy (born March 15, 1968) founded the band in Brandon (Florida) under the name Executioner and in early 1985 released a demo entitled Metal Up Your Ass . After various line-up changes, the guitarists Allan West and JP Chartier from Massacre and bassist Jerome Grable were added. The second demo was recorded in 1986 with this line-up. Chartier and Grable left the band and were replaced by Trevor Peres and Daniel Tucker. Because the New York hardcore band Executioner had just released their debut album, the quintet was renamed Xecutioner in the summer of 1987. Under this name the band recorded another demo and was involved in a sampler under the title Raging Death alongside Sadus and RAVAGE . From the three bands involved, Roadrunner Records chose Xecutioner and signed them. In 1988, under the direction of Scott Burns , four new tracks were recorded in the Morrisound studio, which appeared in early 1989 together with the tracks from the sampler Raging Steel as the debut album Slowly We Rot . Shortly before the release, the band renamed itself Obituary.

The first active years

In the summer of 1989, the debut album was released and received consistently positive reviews from both critics and fans. Shortly after the album was released, bassist Daniel Tucker disappeared without a trace, but reappeared a few months later. Due to his mentally unstable condition, the band was forced to look around for a new bass player, whom they found in Hellwitch's Frank Watkins . At the beginning of 1990 guitarist Allen West had to leave the band for personal reasons and only shortly before the start of the recordings for the second album Cause of Death could James Murphy of Death be engaged as lead guitarist, so that the disc was released at the end of this year. As a tribute to their role models Celtic Frost , the album includes a cover version of Circle of the Tyrants .

In early 1991, James Murphy left the band and switched to Cancer . In the meantime, Allen West had resolved his family problems and returned to the band, followed by a European tour with Demolition Hammer and Morgoth . Then the band began to write the pieces for the third studio album The End Complete , which was released in 1992. To this day it is the most commercially successful album in the band's history. On the following tour with Napalm Death , Trevor Peres and Donald Tardy joined the project Meathook Seed and recorded Embedded in 1993 , before the fourth Obituary album World Demise was released in 1994 . However, the sales of this album did not come close to that of The End Complete and the commercial breakthrough failed to materialize . Rumors that were already circulating that the band had split up have always been denied by the record company. In 1997 Back from the Dead was finally released , which was first recorded outside of Tampa in Miami under the direction of music producer Scott Burns . After a live album was released in early 1998, the musicians decided to put the band on hold for a while. The main reasons for this were that the musicians couldn't live on the money they made with the band and the lack of support from their record company.

From the reunification until today

The time-out originally planned for only a few months turned into several years. Some of the musicians have since played in other bands: Donald Tardy with Andrew WK , Trevor Peres with Catastrophic and Allen West with Lowbrow and Six Feet Under . John Tardy owned a computer company and Frank Watkins was a stockbroker. On the occasion of a show by his band at Ozzfest 2001, Donald Tardy asked his brother John and bassist Frank Watkins to play a few pieces with him on stage. Together with Andrew WK, the trio played a medley of five titles. This can be seen as a trigger for the revival of the band. The first live performance followed in 2004 at the Sun & Steel Festival in Tampa and a few weeks later they played a show in New Jersey. The good response from the audience eventually prompted the band to reform.

The comeback album Frozen in Time was very successful and rose to number 93 in the German album charts. The artwork as well as the covers of The End Complete and Anthology came from Andreas Marschall . In August 2005 founding member Allen West left the band. The reason for this was that he was said to have been drunk during a concert at the Hole in the Sky Festival in Norway, which had led to massive complaints from fans about the band's performance. In 2006, however, West returned to the band.

In 2007 the band released their seventh studio album, Xecutioner's Return . Allen West was unable to attend the recordings because he was in prison from May 2007 to February 2008 for repeatedly violating his probation requirements. For filming Xecutioner's Return mid-2007 Ralph Santolla of Deicide involved. When Allen West did not return to the band after his release, Santolla became a permanent member of the band. In mid-2008 the band recorded an EP called Left to Die , which was released in September 2008.

In March 2009, the Tardy brothers released the album Bloodline under the name Tardy Brothers via Candlelight Records . Jerry Tidwell, who was part of the original line-up of Xecutioner at the time, was hired as guitarist.

Kenny Andrews initially played temporarily bass (2009 for Frank Watkins) and guitar (2011 for Ralph Santolla) for the band and is now (since 2012) a permanent second guitarist. Steve DiGiorgio played bass at the performances in Europe in the summer of 2010 .

In autumn 2013 the band initiated a crowdfunding campaign at kickstarter.com to raise money for the production of a new studio album. In just a few days, they raised a little over $ 60,000. However, since not all donors actually received the money, Obituary actually only had around 45,000 US dollars available for production. At the end of October 2014 the album titled Inked in Blood was released via Relapse Records .

In 2017 the album Obituary was released.

style

Obituary mainly play Death Metal in the middle tempo range, for which bands like Possessed , Death , but also Slayer have been godfathers. The main influences include the riffs and dissonant solos from Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales and the style is characterized by simple and memorable guitar riffs and the vocals of John Tardy. It is noteworthy that John Tardy growls bits of words on the band's first three albums , but does not use any ready-made lyrics. The band was less concerned with the lyrics than with the vocals. On every release following the debut album, more and more pre-formulated lines of text could be heard. Back from the Dead is the band's first album to contain song lyrics throughout.
