Slowly We Rot is the debut album of American death metal - band Obituary . It was released on Roadrunner Records in June 1989 .
Emergence
After bands like Possessed and Death had been pioneers, death metal experienced an increasing boom in the USA in the late 1980s. Obituary's debut Slowly We Rot was also the first well-known production by Scott Burns in the Morrisound Studios , which was frequented by death and thrash metal bands in the following years. For Slowly We Rot , still under the name Xecutioner, only four new tracks were recorded in the Morrisound studio. The rest had already appeared on a sampler called Raging Death . The band only renamed itself shortly before the release.
reception
In the issue of Rock Hard magazine at the time , Götz Kühnemund compared John Tardy's singing with Chuck Schuldiner's . However, he criticized riffs and song structures as only occasionally successful and only recommended the band to "the hardest part" of the readership. He awarded 7.5 out of ten points. Jason Birchmeier from Allmusic called Slowly We Rot "historically significant" and a blueprint for a generation of upcoming death metal bands. The production of Scott Burns is not as crystal clear as on later albums, but these were the early days and the budgets were very low. He awarded four out of five stars.
