Demolition Hammer is an American thrash metal band from New York that was founded in 1986, disbanded in 1994 and has been active again since 2016.

history

The band was formed in 1986 by singer and bassist Steve Reynolds, guitarist James Reilly and drummer John Salemeo. In 1988 the first demo appeared with Skull Fracturing Nightmare , which was followed in 1989 by the second demo Necrology . Vinnie Daze was then represented as the new drummer and Derek Sykes as the second guitarist. Daze, who was actually a tattoo artist, had already designed the band logo and the cover of the second demo. Thereupon Century Media became aware of the band, about which the debut album Tortured Existence appeared a year later . Then all the songs of the second demo as well as two new songs could be heard. The recordings for this took place under the direction of Scott Burns at Morrisound Recording . The release followed various appearances, whereby the band also appeared together with Dark Angel . 1992 followed with the second album with Epidemic of Violence . The cover of this was designed by Michael Whelan (including Cirith Ungol ). The publication followed various appearances, including together with Massacre and Grave . Due to musical differences, guitarist Reilly and drummer Daze left the band and formed the band Deviate NY. The band continued their career with only one guitarist, while Alex Marquez joined the band as the new drummer, who had previously worked for Malevolent Creation and Solstice . After the release of the third album Time Bomb , the band broke up. In 1996, drummer Daze died. At the end of 2008, the albums Tortured Existence and Epidemic Of Violence were re-released, with the recordings containing live pieces as bonus songs. In March 2016, the band's official Facebook page announced that they would be performing live again.

style

According to Metalion , the band played a mixture of death and thrash metal on the demo Skull Fracturing Nightmare , with the thrash metal portion predominating. According to laut.de, Tortured Existence was pretty brutal for its time. Matthias Breusch from Metal Hammer also categorized the music as fast and aggressive Thrash Metal. According to Matthias Herr, the album is reminiscent of the early Slayers in its aggressiveness , although the speed of the songs remains consistently high. The aggressive vocals Reynolds reported mostly from personal views and experiences. Songs like Gelied Remains are about freezing sick people in order to be able to thaw and heal them again later in the future. Steve Reynolds' voice is very reminiscent of Kreators Mille Petrozza , according to laut.de on Epidemic of Violence . In addition, there has been an increase in aggressiveness compared to the predecessor. According to Matthias Herr, the band relies entirely on aggressiveness and not on melodies. Lyrically, too, the band deals with mostly hard topics, since, according to Reynolds, this goes well with the music. Herr compared the music in terms of aggressiveness with the works of Malevolent Creation, Solstice and Exhorder . Uwe Schnädelbach from Metal Hammer compared the album with old works by Dark Angel and Exhorder. Time Bomb showed more influences from Death Metal , so that, according to Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic, they can be compared with Pantera . According to Oliver Recker from Metal Hammer , the songs are now mostly in the mid-tempo range, although the songs sound like a better-produced, old Death Metal release.

Frontman Reynolds himself did not classify the music in death metal, but in thrash metal. The band's music is much more aggressive than normal Thrash Metal, but “Death Metal is really a different box”. The higher aggressiveness is the "typical New York style: very direct and aggressive, without any great technical gadgets, solos, etc.".
