Pantera ( Spanish for Panther ) was a US Metal - band from Arlington , Texas . The founding of the band is often dated to 1981, in 2003 the group split up. Pantera's music had a strong influence on the development of modern metal.
Band history
From 1983 to 1985 Pantera released the albums Metal Magic , Projects in the Jungle and I Am the Night without the support of a record company . The first record, Metal Magic, is a collection of songs stylistically somewhere between commercial kiss and glam metal . From 1984 the style became harder and with Projects in the Jungle an album was created, which is stylistically located between Def Leppard's Pyromania and Iron Maidens Killers . The third album I Am the Night contains the group's first speed metal song (the title track) and otherwise moves between heavy metal and power metal . The album closes with the semi-ballad Forever Tonight.
The consummated shortly after separating from her former singer Terrence Lee and the inclusion of of New Orleans dating Phil Anselmo initiated a series of changes in the band. In 1988, Power Metal was another self-distributed album. The CD contains a new version of the song Down Below (originally a track from the album I Am the Night ), as well as a song called Pussy tight , which Dimebag Darrell sang. The band played a style on power metal between speed metal and the Iron Maidens and Mötley Crües . After that, the group began to pursue a much heavier, independent sound, which they called Groove Metal .
In 1989, after countless attempts at the major label Atlantic Records , Pantera received the long-awaited recording contract and the following year, Terry Date 's Cowboys from Hell, their first album, which was not self-distributed, was released. The outstanding style of the group - shaped by Phil Anselmo's aggressive, powerful vocals, the extravagant playing style of guitarist Dimebag Darrell and the precise double bass playing of his brother Vinnie Paul - caught the attention of critics and heralded the start of a steep career.
After extensive tours across the world, the single Mouth for War from the 1992 album Vulgar Display of Power was the first ever album to reach number 1 in the US metal charts. During this time, Pantera received a lot of attention and confirmation for the pursuit of their previously chosen musical path.
In 1994 Pantera released the album Far Beyond Driven , which it claims should be the heaviest album of all time. The CD is concluded with a cover of Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan, which with its calm atmosphere, the use of acoustic guitars and extraordinary percussion represents a counterpoint to the previous tracks. The band reached the top of the Billboard charts without any radio support and was considered the most influential and groundbreaking hard group in the mid-1990s. Songs like I'm Broken or 5 Minutes Alone are still classics in the metal genre.
In the same year Pantera were asked for a soundtrack contribution to the Hollywood film The Crow . With the song The Badge (originally from Poison Idea ) they contributed a piece that was untypical for the band.
Also in 1994 was Alive and Hostile EP
The Great Southern Trendkill was released in 1996 and should make you forget any commercial borrowings from the previous days in view of the hype surrounding individual rock groups. Pantera achieved their goal in that it remained the band's least-noticed album to this day. Specialist magazines criticized the exaggerated musical brutality and various - also textually themed - drug escapades by Phil Anselmo up to a necessary revival. Announcements by the singer at concerts, some of which were interpreted as racist, left a kink in the career ladder for the first time.
Their release Reinventing the Steel from 2000 is musically a recourse to the previous albums with no really recognizable further development. Nevertheless, the album was largely positively received by fans and critics. Kerry King of Slayer has a guest appearance on Goddamn Electric . After another soundtrack for Heavy Metal in 2000 , everything fell silent about Pantera. Various disputes between Phil Anselmo and the rest of the band members gave rise to rumors of separation.
From 2003 the band was officially disbanded. At this point in time Phil Anselmo was already on the road with his hardcore project Superjoint Ritual , both in interviews and at concerts he didn’t leave his former fellow musicians happy. Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell then formed a new band called Damageplan . Darrell was killed on December 8, 2004 at a concert by this new band at the Alrosa Villa Club in Columbus , USA , when a 25-year-old, mentally disturbed man jumped on stage and shot at him.
In 2012, the promo single Piss, a previously unreleased Pantera song, was released, which comes from the recording sessions for the Vulgar Display of Power published 20 years earlier . The central riff can also be heard in Use My Third Arm from the album Far Beyond Driven (1994).
Founding member Vinnie Paul died on June 22, 2018 at the age of 54.
