After the demise of Pantera , one of the most influential metal bands of the 1990s, the ex-members Darell Lance Abbott (mostly known as Dimebag Darrell) and his brother Vinnie Paul founded the band Damageplan (original: New Found Power) in early 2000 .

With Bob Kakaha (called Bob Zilla ) on the electric bass and Dimebag Darrell's long-time friend Patrick Lachman on the vocals (formerly working for Halford and Diesel Machine on the guitar ), suitable colleagues were quickly found.

Musically very much influenced by Pantera, they tried to incorporate both more modern and more melodious elements into their own music. Despite favorable reviews and guest appearances by Zakk Wylde and Corey Taylor ( Slipknot ), Damageplan did not manage to step out of the shadows of their predecessor band with their debut album New Found Power .

During a concert in Ohio on the night of December 8, 2004, the still young band history was tragically brought to a standstill: During the first song, a gunman jumped onto the stage and shot guitarist Dimebag Darrell at close range , before moving on apparently aimlessly fired himself, hitting more stagehands and spectators. The man could only be stopped by a fatal shot from the gun of a police officer. A total of five victims are to be mourned, two other people were seriously injured and hospitalized.
