Poison Idea is an American hardcore band from Portland, founded in 1980 . The group is known for aggressive music, fatalistic lyrics and the excessive lifestyle of its members. Poison Idea names Black Flag , the Germs and Discharge as early models . The group later also incorporated elements of heavy metal into their sound, for which Motörhead's influence is blamed.

Band history

Poison Idea was founded in 1980 by front man and lead songwriter Jerry Lang (who called himself Jerry A.), guitarist Chris Tense, Glen Estes on bass and Dean Johnson (drums). In 1981 Tom Roberts (later known as Pig Champion) from the befriended band The Imperialist Pigs joined them as the second guitarist. A short time later they separated from Estes, who later joined the befriended band Final Warning . Chris Tense switched to bass, which was the four of us again. In 1982 the demo recording Darby Crash Rides Again , named after Germs singer Darby Crash , was recorded. The band's first official release, Pick Your King , was released in 1983 with an edition of 1,000 and contained 13 songs with a playing time of 16 minutes. The front of the cover shows a picture of Jesus , on the back Elvis Presley was depicted, which was supposed to represent a kind of option. The following year the EP Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes followed with a picture of Elvis and the writing The King on the back, with which the band wanted to make their choice clear. The EP was pressed in red vinyl and marked “Do not pay more than $ 25” ( Pay no more than $ 25” ). In 1986 Poison Idea released the LP Kings of Punk , the title of which is a synonym for the band that is still frequently used today . The group isn't quite as aggressive here anymore: Most of the songs are longer than two minutes.

After a number of other releases, including the 1987 album War All the Time named after the Charles Bukowski novella , the band founded their own label American Leather in 1989, on which they released their first demo from 1982 as well as the following EPs and the album Feel the Darkness from 1990. Among the releases was the EP Fuck Ian MacKaye . With this title, the band expressed their antipathy towards the symbolic figure of the straight-edge movement. In 1992 a cover album came out on which Poison Idea reinterpreted songs by The Damned , the MC5 , Motörhead , Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, among others . On the European tour in 1993 the Norwegian band Turbonegro played their first concerts with their new singer Hank van Helvete in the opening act . After the tour, the band broke up. In 1996, however, the band got back together. A long phase followed, in which there were only isolated signs of the band's continued existence, including isolated concerts and the EP Learning to Scream released in 1998 . Finally, a new album was surprisingly announced for 2006, which was released under the name Latest Will and Testament on the German label Farewell Records . Roberts aka Pig Champion didn't live to see the release: The guitarist, who took his nickname when he reached the limit of 204 kilograms on the scales, died on January 30, 2006 at the age of 47 in his Portland home. In addition to being extremely overweight, his decades of alcohol and drug consumption were also cited as factors in his early death. In an interview from 1990 Roberts had given as the motto Live fast, die young and leave a good-looking corpse.” ('Live fast, die young and leave behind a good-looking corpse'). The quote is from the film noir Knock on Any Door (German title: Knock on doors ), where it of John Derek in the role of gangster spoken Nick Romano.

Poison Idea was on hold for a year after Roberts' death. In 2007 the band played some concerts with the line-up Jerry A., Chris Cuthbert (drums), Jimmy Taylor (guitar), Matt Brainard (guitar) and Rob Hume (bass). She also released a split EP with Kill Your Idols .

After the band split up in 2017, they got together again for a farewell tour in 2019.

influence

Several groups cite Poison Idea as an influence, including Turbonegro. For Zeke , the influence is less in the musical area, but more in appearance and attitude. Their popularity in metal circles skyrocketed in 1994 when the band Pantera covered the Poison Idea title The Badge for the soundtrack of the film The Crow . Also Machine Head tried with Alan's on Fire at a Poison Idea Song. In addition, several tribute albums were recorded for the band: In 1998, Bigger than God, an homage by Scandinavian metal bands, which was mixed by Dan Swanö ; In 2003 Hangover Heartattack ( Farewell Records / Cargo Records ) was released, on which bands like Kill Your Idols and Wolfbrigade interpreted a total of 20 songs by Poison Idea. Members of the band Kill Your Idols also wrote the band history , which appeared in the 100-page booklet .
