Discharge is an influential second generation anarcho-punk band from Great Britain .

style

The band played a very fast, guitar-driven and strongly distorted sound with anti-melodic vocal passages that were more screaming than sung. Later they approached speed metal . Thematically, they focused primarily on anarchist and pacifist topics, and spoke out against capitalism and nuclear war. They were among the forerunners of hardcore punk and founded their own sub-genre: the “D-Beat” (or “Dis-Core” or “Dis-Punk”), the “D” standing for discharge. The D-Beat prevailed especially in Japan, Brazil and Scandinavia - bands of the genre not only take over the band and the music from Discharge, but also the textual themes, the cover artwork and even the names and lettering of bands like Discard , Disclose , Disfear , Dissect or Recharge reveal their relationship to Discharge. They also anticipated important elements of crustcore .

history

Terry "Tez" Roberts (vocals), Tony "Bones" Roberts (guitar), Roy "Rainy" Wainwright (guitar), Nigel Bamford (bass) and Akko (drums) formed the band in 1977. Shortly thereafter, Rainy switched to bass Nigel Bamford left the band. In this founding phase, Discharge was still very much based on the Sex Pistols . In this line-up, the band released only one demo.

1979 Kelvin "Cal" Morris replaced Tez as singer, Tez played drums and Akko left the band entirely. In this formation they created the classic discharge sound. Although the line-up only lasted about a year, for many fans this is the band's classic line-up. Tez created the D-beat during this time .

After the EP release in 1980, various line-up changes followed. The band's music slowed down and began moving more and more from fast punk to metal in the mid-1980s . It wasn't until 2002 that the 1979 line-up came back together to record the album Discharge .
