Soulfly is an existing since 1997 Metal - band . It was founded by Max Cavalera after he left his previous band Sepultura in 1996 due to internal quarrels . While Nu Metal was predominantly played on the first three albums , the style has increasingly moved towards Thrash / Groove Metal again since the 2004 album Prophecy and is reminiscent of the music of Sepultura.

history

Marc Rizzo on the Rockharz in Ballenstedt (2015)

The band around from Brazil coming Metal musician Max Cavalera completed Roy Mayorga on drums (formerly with the band Thorn in operation), Jackson Bandeira on guitar (previously at Chico Science ) and the already known Sepultura Marcello D. Rapp on bass. In addition to his position as a singer, Max Cavalera also works on the guitar; he is also the driving force and often also the executive force when using more unusual instruments, such as the berimbau and an electric sitar .

In this way, the bandleader tries to approach his vision of a kind of world music in a rockier guise without set boundaries. He would like to lead the music group "with the idea of combining diverse sounds with spiritual inspirations". The debut album Soulfly was released in 1998 and reached number 82 on the US Billboard charts. After extensive touring, Joe Nunez took over the place behind the drums.

A noticeable influence of Nu Metal was noticeable on the second work Primitive (2000). Due to the media hype around this new kind of metal and a large number of guest musicians (including Tom Araya from Slayer , Corey Taylor from Slipknot and Sean Lennon ) the album became the most successful in the band's history. It peaked at number 32 on the Billboard 200 and number eleven on the US independent charts.

The syllable Aum

Max Cavalera himself produced the third album, called 3 , which was released in 2002 and reached number 46 on the Billboard charts. On the release there were various reminiscences of earlier Thrash works and Roy Mayorga was back behind the drums. Although the album is still generally named with the number "3" to this day, it must be noted that the symbol on the cover is similar to the number, but actually shows an artistically designed form of the spiritual " Aum ".

For the fourth album Prophecy , Max Cavalera recruited a completely new line-up and made it clear that Soulfly is not a permanent band for him, but a constantly changing project with him as a constant.

The band's logo since the early days

Joe Nunez was back on drums, Marc Rizzo (ex- Ill Niño ) new on guitar. Max Cavalera justified the somewhat unusual line-up with two bassists ( David Ellefson from Megadeth and Bobby Burns from Primer 55 ) on the grounds that he needed experienced musicians from different fields to achieve the best possible realization of different musical styles.

After several excursions into Latin American musical realms, which were already clearly to be found on Sepultura's album Roots for the first time, you can hear the results of a longer journey through Eastern Europe on Prophecy . There Max Cavalera played together with the Serbian hardcore band Eyesburn , who also participated in the recording of the song Moses - the lyrics of a dissolute statement on Max Cavalera's religious convictions. Prophecy was released on March 30, 2004 and made it to number 24 in the German charts.

The title of the fifth album, released on September 30, 2005, is Dark Ages . It was recorded in Arizona , Belgrade , Paris , Moscow and Istanbul and thus unites a similar musical world tour as its predecessor Prophecy . For the first time the line-up of the band hadn't changed between two albums, only Dave Ellefson was no longer on board as the second bassist. As is typical for Soulfly, there are again some guest musicians on Dark Ages , for example Nemanja Kojić (Song: Innerspirit ), Paul Fillipenko and Billy Milano ( Molotov ), David Ellefson ( Riot starter ) or Max Cavalera's stepson Richie Cavalera ( Staystrong ). In general, Soulfly's fifth work again sounds more like the previous band Sepultura , music critics predominantly praised this partial return without giving up Soulfly's own characteristics. In the German Metal Hammer was Dark Ages voted "Album of the Month".

On July 25, 2008 Soulfly released their sixth studio album with Conquer . It was recorded in September 2007 in the studio of its own bassist, Bobby Burns. As on the previous albums, there are various guest musicians such as Dave Peters from Throwdown or David Vincent from Morbid Angel .

The seventh studio album entitled Omen was released on May 25, 2010. On July 18, bassist Bobby Burns announced his exit via Twitter. He would like to take care of his own projects more.

Burns' place was initially taken by Johny Chow, also bassist on Max Cavalera's other project Cavalera Conspiracy . On June 30, 2011, the band announced that they had found a new bassist in Tony Campos . Campos previously played with bands such as Static-X , Prong and Ministry .

At the end of 2011, the band was in the studio to record their eighth studio album, Enslaved , which was released on March 9, 2012 . Chris "Zeuss" Harris ( Chimaira , All That Remains ) was the producer . With David Kinkade (ex- Borknagar ) a new drummer is represented in the band.

In October 2012, drummer David Kinkade left the band, his position was taken over by Max Cavalera's son Zyon. On October 4, 2013, the ninth studio album Savages was released , which is distributed for the first time through Nuclear Blast . In 2015, Tony Campos left the band to join Fear Factory .
