3 is the third studio album of the Metal - band Soulfly . It was released on Roadrunner Records in June 2002 .

Origin and style

The album was recorded at Chaton Studios in Phoenix , Arizona , with Max Cavalera producing himself and Terry Date doing the mix. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , a minute of silence was recorded on the album with 9-11-01 . On the cover you can see the Om symbol, which is used in Indian religions. Guests were Cristian Machado from Ill Niño , who sang on One , and Cavalera's stepson Ritchie and singer Asha Rabouin, who did the vocals with Cavalera on Tree of Pain . Brazilian influences can be found in the instrumentation, in which sitar and berimbau were used. With One Nation a piece of Sacred Reichs Surf Nicaragua was covered, in which Greg Hall and Wiley Arnett from that band also participated. The album cover was designed by the tattoo artist Leo Zulueta .

reception

Andreas Himmelstein awarded nine out of ten points in Rock Hard magazine . He wrote that the band was delivering their "most complex and strongest album to date". The band's crossover sounds “much more organic than before”.
