Leo Zulueta (* 1952 ) is an American tattoo artist. He is known as the "father of modern tribal tattoos ". "Leo Zulueta is a pioneer of what is commonly referred to as tribal tattooing, a trend in the contemporary tattoo scene that established itself in the United States in the late 1970s."

Life

Leo Zulueta was born in 1952 at a naval hospital in Bethesda to a Roman Catholic Filipino family. Zulueta spent his early years on the island of Oahu in Hawaii and in San Diego . He attended San Diego State College in 1970, where he studied arts and crafts .

In the 1970s, he began researching traditional Bornean tattoo. In 1976 he met the tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy , who encouraged and trained him to tattoo. In 1981, Zulueta began tattooing professionally.

In 1989 it was featured in the RE / Search publication Modern Primitives. In 1992, Zulueta founded Black Wave Tattoo in Los Angeles, California, which he sold in 2000. In 2017, the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Michigan hosted the exhibit "Black Waves: The Tattoo Art of Leo Zulueta"; the exhibition was curated by Ron Platt.

In September 2019 Zulueta took part in the second Tribal Tattoo Tour Europe. The tour led from Amsterdam via Antwerp , Forchheim , Lucerne , Verona , Rome, Trieste , Vienna, Leipzig to Aachen, where it ended at the Imperial City Tattoo Expo 2019.
