Sacred Reich is an American thrash metal - band from Phoenix , Arizona , founded in 1985, disbanded in 2000 and again prevents concerts since the year of 2007.

history

The band was formed in 1985 in Phoenix , Arizona . Their first demo Draining You of Life was released in 1986. For this, the later singer Phil Rind had already written the lyrics, but they were sung by Dan Kelly, who should not appear in the later history of the band. The demo became known nationwide through the support of Jason Newsted . The track Ignorance was first published on the sampler Metal Massacre , followed by a contract with Brian Slagels Metal Blade Records . In 1987 the debut album Ignorance appeared there , on which Rind took over the vocals as well as the bass. Guitarist Martinek had since lost his job to Wiley Arnett. After the EP Surf Nicaragua was released in 1988 , which contained Draining You of Life by Sacred Reich's demo, as well as a cover version of Black Sabbath's War Pigs , the band was able to gain increased attention.

The release was followed by a world tour. In 1988 the band toured the United States with Atrophy and Forbidden . This was followed by another tour together with Motörhead in Europe . In 1989, further appearances followed in Europe together with Forbidden. In the same year the band recorded the live EP Live at Dynamo at Dynamo Open Air . In the meantime under contract with Enigma Records , Sacred Reich released the second studio album The American Way in 1990 . In early 1991, drummer Greg Hall left the band and was replaced by Dave McClain . A tour with Sepultura followed . After the bankruptcy of Enigma Records, the band switched to Hollywood Records , where the single A Question was released in late 1991 , followed by the third studio album Independent (1993). The line-up of the band consisted of beef and guitarists Arnett and Rainey and drummer Dave McClain. Gigs followed in Europe, some of which had to be canceled due to illness. She also played concerts in the USA together with Pantera and Danzig .

After Hollywood Records terminated the record deal in 1994, the band was relatively quiet in 1995. She contributed her version of the Black Sabbath song Sweet Leaf to the album Hempilation . She also took a version of Judas Priests Rapid Fire , with Rob Halford as a guest singer. After the band returned to Metal Blade Records, they released the album Heal in early 1996 . Even before its appearance, drummer McClain had switched to Machine Head and was initially replaced by Chuck Fitzgerald. Sacred Reich toured the album with him. Founding member Greg Hall returned to the band in late 1996. With him, Sacred Reich made several appearances in their hometown of Phoenix in December 1996, during which the recordings for the live album Still Ignorant were recorded. The album was released in 1997 by Metal Blade. In 2000, the Sacred Empire disbanded. In 2001, Wiley Arnett formed The Human Condition with St. Madness singer Patrick Flannery. However, the project had to be temporarily interrupted because Arnett was in a car accident on August 2nd. Meanwhile, Hall briefly joined Soulfly in October 2001 for a few studio sessions .

As announced in November 2006, the band got back together for a few gigs in summer 2007. They played at Wacken Open Air 2007 , among others . A double CD including a DVD was released under the name Surf Ignorance in June 2007. It includes the LP Ignorance , the EP Surf Nicaragua and the demo Draining You of Life as well as bonus material. Also in 2009 Sacred Reich were touring Europe between May and June and also played at the Rock Hard Festival in Gelsenkirchen. As a result, the band performed more often again, but did not release any new albums and separated from Greg Hall in 2018. At the beginning of 2018 it was announced that Sacred Reich had signed another contract with Metal Blade Records with the aim of recording a new studio album entitled Awakening . In December 2018, drummer Dave McClain returned, who had meanwhile played for Machine Head . A little later Jason Rainey, who was replaced by Joey Radziwill, left the band.

style

The band's lyrics primarily dealt with social and political issues from a critical point of view of the Republican US policy of the Reagan and Bush eras. The band is considered an important representative of the Thrash Metal genre, with some songs being referred to as "classics".
