Garry Sharpe-Young

Garry Anthony Sharpe-Young (born 1964 in the United Kingdom , † March 12, 2010 in Taranaki , New Zealand ) was a British music journalist. In addition to several publications on the metal scene , he was also the founder of the website Rockdetector.com (today: MusicMight).

Life

Garry Sharpe-Young became interested in rock music and metal at the age of 14 and quickly became a huge fan of these types of music. As a teenager, he also began to imitate various cover art . When he got upset about the cover of a band at Kerrang and called Ebony Records , he told the label owner that the cover looked "shit" and that he could draw a better one. In fact, this was taken seriously and he first created the cover artwork for the compilation Metal Warriors . This was followed by the cover of Savages Loose 'n' Lethal and Grim Reapers See You in Hell . Through the photographer Robert Ellis he was able to establish contact with the Scorpions and Queensrÿche , for whom he created some logos and backdrops. He also worked for Rob Halford and Guns N 'Roses .

He began writing for Metal Mania magazine from San Francisco . This was followed by work for the magazines Aardschok America and Metal Forces . While he then worked as A&R for various labels, he published a number of music books, including the encyclopedia The Ultimate Hard Rock Guide , which contained around 6000 bands on more than 800 pages. The book was published in Germany in English by the magazine Heavy oder was !? (today: Heavy ).

In 2001 he designed the concept for the band database Rockdetector.com , which is considered to be one of the largest metal and rock databases on the Internet. Several book publications with the records on certain genres, including Black and Thrash Metal , followed. Sharpe-Young also wrote biographies of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath .

In 2002 Sharpe-Young moved to New Zealand, where he worked as a columnist for the Taranaki Daily News and then as an event manager in the Taranaki area and New Plymouth . Among other things, he brought the reformed Fleetwood Mac to New Zealand in 2008 and founded the guitar festival called G-Taranaki.

Garry Sharpe-Young died unexpectedly on March 12, 2010 at home of a brain aneurysm . He left a wife and three children.
