Danzig is a rock band founded in 1987 by the American musician Glenn Danzig .

history

After the Misfits , which were founded in 1977, and Samhain - founded in 1983 - Danzig started his third band under his own name in 1987, which would also be his most successful and in which he is still active as a singer and songwriter today. The original line-up included bassist Eerie Von and John Christ on guitar, with whom Danzig already played at Samhain. The hardcore drummer Chuck Biscuits ( DOA , Black Flag , Circle Jerks ) was on the drums . The logo with the horned skull is also from Samhain, while Glenn Danzig took over the skull graphic from a cover picture of the Marvel comic series The Saga of Crystar , which was drawn by Michael Golden.

Producer Rick Rubin , who originally wanted to put together a hard rock supergroup, saw a Samhain concert in July 1986 and made contact with Glenn Danzig. However, Danzig did not want to work without Eerie Von and insisted on having him in the band. A first release of the band appeared on the soundtrack Less Than Zero by Rubin, which also included a cover by Roy Orbison . Danzig signed a record deal in 1987 with Rubin's label Def American, later American Recordings . The following year the first, self-titled album , which was also produced by Rubin, was released.

After touring activities, including with Metallica , Danzig II: Lucifuge followed in 1990 , again with Rubin's production, which received increasing attention due to its characteristic style, such as the concise singing. The associated videos, e.g. B. Her Black Wings , have been played on more rock-friendly music television such as MTV's Headbangers Ball .

In 1992 Danzig released Danzig III: How the Gods Kill, the album with the highest chart ratings to date, which was first co-produced by Glenn Danzig. It had a Giger cover and again successful video releases with Dirty Black Summer and How the Gods Kill . Because of some controversial interview statements by Glenn Danzig, the band was dropped from a festival in Italy this year. At Rock am Ring 1993, the band was also on the verge of being kicked out because Danzig messed with members of the Def Leppard band .

Biggest single success was in 1994 the piece Mother of the six years previously released debut, which appeared in 1993 on the EP Thrall / Demonsweat Live . The song Mother first became a radio hit with more rock-friendly stations. A video was created from live scenes, which in turn made it into the rotation on MTV . Years later it was used in the video games Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas , True Crime: New York City and Guitar Hero .

In October 1994 Danzig 4 appeared , sometimes referred to as Danzig 4p after the exact label on the cover . It was praised by the critics, and Cantspeak, the band's second most successful single, was released, but it missed the Billboard Hot 100. After another tour with Metallica, drummer Chuck Biscuits left the band and was replaced by Joey Castillo .

The album Blackacidevil was recorded in autumn 1996 with a completely new line-up put together by Glenn Danzig - after Eerie Von and John Christ left the band in 1995 . In addition to Castillo, bassist Josh Lazie and on guitar Joseph Bishara and Mark Chaussee could be heard, for the first time Prong guitarist Tommy Victor was recruited for the tour , who sought new activities after leaving his previous band. Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains was also involved in three tracks on the album . The album with distorted vocals, partly influenced by industrial , did not achieve the success of its predecessors.

In the next few years the line-up changed constantly, almost exclusively Danzig itself remained the same. The album Danzig 6:66: Satan's Child was recorded in 1999 with Jeff Chambers on guitar, but ex- agnostic front guitarist Todd Schofield could be seen live.

The latter also worked on the following Danzig 777: I Luciferi in 2002 , which increasingly tied in with the band's earlier style. Howie Pyro was the new bass player. After tours with the re-active Prong and Chimaira , Danzig changed the band members again and again and went back to Tommy Victor on guitar, who followed the Blackest-of-the-Black tour with Meshuggah , Nile , Opeth and Superjoint Ritual recorded the 2004 album Circle of Snakes . In 2005 the band was on tour with Kataklysm and Trivium .

With Johnny Kelly and Kenny Hickey, two Type-O-Negative members had also been working for Danzig since 2006 , Kelly toured with the band occasionally since 2002. Hickey was replaced again in 2008 by Tommy Victor, who is now playing in the band for the third time. In 2010 Deth Red Sabaoth appeared after a six-year hiatus .

style

The sound of the first four albums is a mixture of hard rock , metal and blues elements . Together with the dark lyrics and the expressive vocals, the band embodies a very independent mix of styles. From 1996 onwards there was an addition of industrial rock elements, but this was dropped again at the latest on the album Circle of Snakes - interestingly, at the moment when Prong singer and guitarist Tommy Victor, who had also used such style elements for years, made his second move Time temporarily took over the guitar.

reception

Danzig's song Thirteen from the album 6:66: Satan's Child is recorded in the film Hangover while driving to Las Vegas. Danzig's song Black Hell was used for the soundtrack of the movie Hangover 2 . Danzig's song Mother was used for the credits of the computer game Fear 3 , as a song on the radio station "Radio X" in the computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and in the movie Hangover 3 .
