action

Two days before the wedding with his great love Tracy, Doug and his friends leave for a bachelorette party in Las Vegas . In addition to the dentist Stu, who claims in front of his dominant girlfriend Melissa that he is going to a wine tasting , and the married but bored teacher and father Phil, Doug's future brother-in-law Alan also joins them.

All four of them go to Las Vegas in their future father-in-law's Mercedes convertible , rent an expensive suite in Caesars Palace , drink Jägermeister on the hotel roof - and wake up the next morning completely hungover and with a tear in the ravaged suite with a white chicken walking around. There's also a tiger in the bathroom , and Bridegroom Doug has disappeared. Stu, Phil and Alan have almost no memories of the previous night and begin to reconstruct what happened on the basis of circumstantial evidence: Doug's hotel mattress is hanging on a statue on the facade of the hotel, Phil is wearing a patient's bracelet, Stu is missing an incisor, and he is An unknown baby is found in the wardrobe and they take it with them.

When a bellhop pulls up in front of the hotel entrance in a police car, gets out and hands the vehicle to the three perplexed men with the words "Here is your car, officers", the three men take the opportunity and drive to the city hospital to see the doctor to speak to who treated Phil. He tells them that they came to the hospital the night before from a wedding. The group then drives to the Best Little Wedding Chapel , where Stu apparently married the stripper Jade, whom he did not know, the night before . To annul the marriage, their consent is required so that the group can be given an address in Jade's chapel.

In front of the wedding church they are attacked by two men armed with baseball bats, but are able to escape with the now badly demolished police car and drive to Jade. It turns out that the baby found in the closet of her suite that morning is hers. Shortly thereafter, the police storm Jade's apartment and arrest the three men for stealing the police car.

At the station, Phil speaks to Tracy on the phone. He tells her that the whole group will be spending another night in Las Vegas because the hotel gave them a free night. After negotiations with the police officers, as a result of which Phil, Stu and Alan made themselves available as test subjects for stun guns , the three were released from custody without charge. They find their car, but there is an angry naked Asian in the trunk of the car. He knocks all three down with a crowbar before fleeing. Alan then confesses to his two colleagues that he accidentally mixed the knockout drops of Rohypnol , known as "Roofies", into the Jägermeister instead of ecstasy , which they drank together on the hotel roof in the evening.

Arriving at the hotel, the three meet in their suite the angry Mike Tyson , who first knocks Alan down and then demands that the tiger, which was stolen from him, which is still in the bathroom of the suite, be brought back to his villa. This succeeds even if the tiger destroys the upholstery of the car. In the mansion, Tyson plays a surveillance video for the gentlemen, on which further embarrassments of the troop, which numbered four men at the time of the tiger theft, can be seen. On the way back, their vehicle is rammed by the men who had already acted aggressively in front of the wedding church. The leader of the group turns out to be the naked Asian man from the trunk who accuses the men of theft. His bag in which chips worth 80,000 dollars were, was apparently reversed. He demands the money back and in return offers the release of Doug, who appears to be in the back seat of the Asian's car, hooded and tied up.

Phil, Stu and Alan succeed in winning the required 80,000 US dollars that night by counting cards at Black Jack in the Riviera Casino , with Alan turning out to be a brilliant analyst. At the handover the next day, however, it turns out that the ransomed Doug is not the boyfriend, but the drug dealer of the same name who wrongly sold Alan the roofies a few days ago. When pondering the name “Roofies”, Stu remembers that the windows of her hotel cannot be opened, so the bed mattress was not thrown out of her hotel room window, but obviously from the hotel roof, where the group was Jägermeister in the evening had been drinking. So you must have locked Doug out on the roof and then forgot about it.

The group drives to the hotel and finds the missing friend in delirium on the roof. He also has the missing $ 80,000 casino chips in his pocket. His skin is badly sunburned and there are only four hours left for the wedding. All four drive home quickly in his future father-in-law's car, which is now totally battered, and arrive in time for the wedding.

Stu breaks up with his dominant girlfriend Melissa after meeting Jade again in Las Vegas. After the wedding, Alan finds a digital camera in the car that the group had with them during their night and whose photos clarify the last open questions and help to close the gaps in their film tears. These photos can be seen during the credits.

background

The cost of producing the film was approximately $ 35 million.

The film premiered on May 30, 2009 in The Hague . It hit US cinemas on June 5, 2009 and grossed almost $ 45 million on the opening weekend. In Germany and Switzerland the film opened in cinemas on July 23, 2009, in Austria it opened one day later. At the end of August 2009, the film had grossed more than $ 400 million worldwide and was one of the most successful films of 2009 at the time.

On December 4th, 2009, the Hangover DVD and Blu-Ray Disc came out in Germany. In addition to the theatrical version, the Blu-Ray disc contains an extended cut, which is only available in English. As bonus material, the theatrical version features picture-in-picture commentary by the four main actors, a mix of swear words used in the film, a recording of the title In the Air Tonight sung by Mike Tyson and other pictures from the camera, which was believed to be lost . The Blu-Ray disc also contains a tour along the Route of Desolation, which tracks the route with background information that the four main actors covered that night, a collection of slapsticks and outtakes , the title Three Best Friends sung by the main actors and the Title Fame of the Dan Band .

The filming of the film took place from October 2008 in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Rialto , whereby only the highway scenes were filmed at the latter location. The exterior scenes and scenes in the foyer of the hotel were filmed in Caesars Palace, while the later devastated hotel room was adapted to the original and set up in a studio. The Best Little Wedding Chapel was built especially for the shoot.

A distinctive Mercedes was stolen from the film team during filming. The following day, local police blocked some streets for a scene. In the traffic that had come to a standstill, the vehicle that had been stolen the day before was discovered and the driver arrested.

After Undressing and New York, I Love You, Hangover was the third film in which Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha starred together. For the scenes in which the baby can be seen, a total of three different pairs of twins stood in front of the camera. The role of Jade was originally intended for Lindsay Lohan , who refused the role, but later expressed her regret that she had not participated in the film. The producer Todd Phillips has a cameo at Caesars Palace, where he uses the elevator for an intimate moment with a lady before the four main characters enter. Phillips waived his usual fee and instead got a partnership with the film.

Numbers play a special role in Hangover, including the supposedly unlucky number 13 . The first scene, which takes place in Las Vegas, is accompanied by the music of the band Danzig with the title Thirteen .

The film contains several allusions to the American film drama Rain Man in 1988, in which Dustin Hoffman to on a Savant Syndrome sufferer autistic plays Raymond, who by his brother Charlie, played by Tom Cruise , u. a. can win larger sums of money by counting cards at Black Jack in a casino . A conversation develops between Doug, Alan and Stu, in the course of which Doug approaches the other two about the film.

Ed Helms and Rachael Harris each played a reporter role in Evan Almighty in 2007 .

Another track in the score is Can't Tell Me Nothing by Kanye West , for which the artist requested the production of an alternative music video with the participation of actor Zach Galifianakis, who can be seen in the film . At the end of the film, The Dan Band can be seen, who already appeared in Old School - We Don't Let Anything Burn and Starsky & Hutch .

For the scenes in which Ed Helms' tooth gap should be seen, the latter took out the replacement tooth that he usually wears, as he does not have a lateral incisor in the first quadrant .

The original plan was for Ken Jeong to jump out of the trunk of the Mercedes fully clothed. However, he decided against these guidelines and preferred to shoot the scene naked, as he felt this more appropriate to his role.

Bradley Cooper reported in Toronto that the shooting was hardly noticed by the residents of Las Vegas. He ran across the street covered in blood and with scratches from the tiger on his neck, accompanied by his fellow actor Justin Bartha, who was completely sunburned with red make-up for the scene, but none of the passers-by addressed them.

Due to a wiretapped telephone conversation about the movie Hangover was 2012 in Germany, a 22-year-old Moroccan accused of alleged attempted incitement to murder and almost a year in custody taken. After a verbatim translation of the tapped telephone conversation was made from Arabic in addition to the summary of the conversation available to the court , the regional court uncovered his mistake, acquitted the defendant and compensated her with a payment of 7,000 euros.

Reviews

Times Online called Hangover "one of the funniest movies in a long time". Jason Salomons from the British newspaper The Observer praised Todd Phillips' clever and tight directorial work, which does not get lost in idiocy like films like The Wedding Crashers or Me, You and the Other . The film, cast with relatively unknown actors, is a "unique, little classic of the genre". Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave Hangover four stars out of five and wrote that, given the plot, he originally expected a bad movie. Hangover then turned out to be a "very humorous" film that was suspenseful in a peculiar way, "like a new sequel to Saw from the pen of Joe Orton ."

Derek Malcolm of the London Evening Standard gave Hangover three out of five stars and criticized the fact that the film, which presents the relapse of men into puberty, does not have the courage to criticize these "terrible idiots". At the same time, he presented the few female characters in the film, such as the stupid but lovable stripper, as just as ridiculous as the men. Nevertheless, the film is said to be above average and "played excellently".

The lexicon of international films wrote that Hangover was “a brutal, coarse comedy in which the harmless excesses of the night are brought to light episodically, whereby relevant genre models are still to be surpassed. Thanks to a successful timing and good actors, absurdly funny tips are won from the rather conventional script ”.

Awards

The film won the 2010 Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture - Comedy or Musical . At the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards 2010, Hangover was recognized for best comedy with the Critics Choice Award.

Soundtrack

The official Decca Records soundtrack for the film includes twelve tracks.

No. title Interpreter
1. It's Now Or Never El Vez
2. Thirteen Danzig
3. Take it off The Donnas
4th Fever The cramps
5. Wedding bells Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps
6th In The Air Tonight Phil Collins
7th Stu's song Ed Helms
8th. Rhythm and Booze Treat Her Right
9. Iko Iko The Belle Stars
10. Three best friends Zach Galifianakis
11. Ride The Sky II Revolution Mother
12. Candy shop Dan Finnerty and The Dan Band

The official soundtrack was heavily criticized by the film's fan base, as only twelve of the 21 titles used in the film can be found on the official sound carrier. In the opinion of fans, many of the missing titles are essential for the desired mood in various scenes and therefore also of corresponding importance for the soundtrack.

Sequels

Plans for a sequel existed even before Hangover was shown in theaters. Filming for the sequel began in October 2010 and was again directed by Todd Phillips. The production was again funded by Warner Bros. The theatrical release in the USA was on May 26th 2011, the German theatrical release of Hangover 2 took place one week later, on June 2nd, 2011.

The third part of the Blackout saga started in German cinemas on May 30, 2013. In the United States, Hangover 3 launched on May 23, 2013.
