action

Molly and Carl are a happy couple preparing for their wedding in Hawaii, which will be organized by Molly's father. He spices up an address to the young bridal couple with various attacks on his future son-in-law, who also works in his company. Carl's best friend Dupree, whom he has known for 25 years, is also present, but this does not prevent him from laughing heartily at the attacks on Carl. On the evening before the wedding, a pre-party takes place in a bar, at which Dupree's casual lifestyle with a lot of alcohol becomes apparent. Meanwhile, Carl devotes himself entirely to his future wife. In the evening, Carl sits down with Dupree on the beach, Carl gives Dupree a hip flask. Dupree apologizes for laughing when Molly's father addressed him. Dupree says to Carl that he is something very special and that he has always admired him for his "carlness". The next day, as a best man, he wears a badge on his shirt with a lightning bolt and the two letters BM (for best man , English for best man ).

Back home after their wedding and honeymoon, Carl and Molly move into their new house and have enough to do with 111 wedding favors. Carl learns at Thompson Land Development , Molly's father's company, that he has been promoted. Carl then visits his two friends Neil and Dupree in a bar in the evening.

After Neil heads home in view of his wife's curfew, Dupree reveals that he was fired for not taking a vacation for Carl's wedding, losing his apartment, and because he only owned a company car his car. Since then he has slept on a cot in his regular bar. Because the regular guests there also want to get rid of Dupree, Carl takes his best friend and Molly home with him and the two take him in temporarily until Dupree can stand on his own two feet again. Molly is being polite, although she's clearly frustrated when Dupree opens with all of his belongings, including a moose head. The next morning, Molly and Carl find Dupree, stark naked, asleep on their couch. During his stay, Dupree does next to nothing to get back into employment, instead he causes trouble and acts chaotic by flooding the bathroom and simply strutting into Molly and Carl's bedroom. Molly sets Dupree up with her colleague Mandy. Dupree takes a bite, but Molly is still shocked when she, coming from dinner, opens the front door and finds the two of them enjoying themselves together. To make matters worse, Dupree also manages to torch half the living room with candles.

After Carl has thrown Dupree out of the house because of the incident and Mandy wants to move in, Carl and Molly celebrate their regained freedom with dinner outside the home. On the way back home they find Dupree crouching on a bench with all his belongings, it is raining cats and dogs. Molly insists on taking him back into the house. The next day, Dupree makes amends by renovating the living room and writing thanks for Carl for the wedding favors, as well as making friends with the kids in the neighborhood.

Carl is now very stressed from the promotion. Molly's father uses greed for profit to force Carl to implement plans that Carl does not like, asks him to take his wife's name so that the Thompson name will remain, and even hands him a brochure about sterilization after Carl mentions that he wants to have children. Involved by work, Carl does not manage, as he had promised Molly, to visit her at the school where she teaches and to report on his work in front of her children on the career information day . Instead, he asks Dupree, who is even able to inspire the children, which is a pleasure for Molly. That same evening, Dupree cooks a sumptuous supper for Molly, as Carl is late again, so Molly and Dupree start without him. When Carl finally shows up, he is a little jealous of the fact that the two of them have had dinner together and are having a good time with a few glasses of wine.

The evening after Carl and Molly are already in bed, Dupree is masturbating in the living room when Molly comes down because she cannot sleep. She drops her glass in alarm, waking up an angry Carl. However, after Molly discovers that the porn belongs to Carl, who hid it from her, Molly is mad at him. Carl throws Dupree out of the house, suspecting an affair, which shocked Dupree. In the evening, Molly's father is invited to dinner. Dupree wants to unobtrusively get his things out of the house, but falls off the roof and Molly brings him back into the house. After it turns out that Molly's father gets on well with Dupree, Carl angrily jumps over the table and Dupree's throat. Carl then leaves the house.

The next day, Dupree causes all of the town's children to look for Carl. Dupree eventually finds Carl in the bar and convinces him to apologize to Molly after Carl realizes how much she means to him. Dupree helps Carl break into Molly's father's office by distracting the security guard while Carl walks into his father-in-law's office and then confronts him in person. Dupree, who is being chased by the security guard, falls through the ceiling, after which he hits the table. Dupree and Carl return to their apartment building, where Carl and Molly make up again, Carl apologizes, and agrees with him that they will both work on themselves. From now on, Dupree earns his money as a motivational guru by transferring the “Carlheit” number to everyone: Everyone has a “-heit” in themselves.

Reviews

"The gender comedy, with its splendid actors, draws its wit from the dismantling of bourgeois everyday life and distributes amusing swipes at a specifically American expression of prudish"

"One of those so-called" romantic comedies "that are neither funny nor original. Annoying guys with even more annoying friends are not enough to offer an entertaining story, especially since the gag factor is so low here that you are more likely to fall asleep. "

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

controversy

The band Steely Dan has released a statement suggesting that the plot of the film was based on their song " Cousin Dupree ": a ten paragraph letter to Luke Wilson on hotel writing paper that they posted on their website .

The band asked Owen Wilson to join them on stage at one of their concerts to publicly apologize for the film.

Owen Wilson took the letter ironically and made the statement that he has never had a "Mr. Steely Dan “and that his future film would be titled Hey 19 (a line from Steely Dan's hit" Hey Nineteen ").
