Marcos Valle
Marcos Kostenbader Valle (born September 14, 1943 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian composer , singer , guitarist and pianist who initially belonged to the so-called second generation of Bossa Nova . Later in his career, Valle turned to styles such as soul , funk , MPB (Música Popular do Brasil) and Brazilectro.
biography
Valle began learning the piano at the age of six. The first successful recording of him and his brother Paulo Sergio, who wrote the lyrics for him, was Sonho de Maria , recorded by the Tamba Trio in 1963.
He founded a trio with Edu Lobo and Dori Caymmi , who were later also famous . In 1966, Valles most successful song, Summer Samba (also known as So Nice or Samba de verão ), reached number two on the US charts . In the USA alone, at least 80 versions of the song were subsequently recorded.
In 1963 Valle recorded his first LP Samba demais with his own compositions Amor de nada , Razão do amor , Tudo de você , Sonho de Maria , E vem o sol and Ainda mais lindo , all with texts by Paulo Sérgio Valle. The album also contained the songs Vivo sonhando ( Tom Jobim ), Moça flor (Durval Ferreira / Lula Freire), Canção pequenina (Pingarilho), Ela é carioca (Tom Jobim / Vinícius de Moraes ), Ilusão à toa (Johnny Alf) and A. morte de um Deus de sal ( Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli). The album won several awards. At this time, Valle began to give concerts. So he gave up his law studies at the University of Rio de Janeiro in the second year.
In 1965 his second album O compositor eo cantor Marcos Valle ("The composer and singer Marcos Valle") was released with the songs Gente , Preciso aprender a ser só , Samba de verão , A resposta and Deus brasileiro , all again in collaboration with Paulo Sérgio Valle originated. Valle also traveled to the United States , where he was part of Sérgio Mendes ' band , Brasil'65, for seven months , with whom he performed in nightclubs, universities and on the Andy Williams TV show . Then he returned to Brazil.
In 1966, Walter Wanderley's recording of "Summer Samba" reached number 2 on the US charts. That year, Valle also began recording his third LP, which he did not finish. Instead, he returned to the United States the following year and recorded the instrumental LP Braziliance! A música de Marcos Valle on. In the same year, Valle released another LP, Samba'68 , on the Verve label . It contained some of his greatest successes, in addition to the aforementioned Summer Samba, Crickets Sing for Ana Maria and Batucada. Eumir Deodato took care of the arrangements, while Norman Gimbel , who had already translated Tom Jobim's Garota de Ipanema ( The Girl from Ipanema ) into English, wrote the English lyrics for the album, which then sold very well. Nevertheless, because of homesickness, Valle moved back to Rio; he also feared being recruited in the USA for the Vietnam War .
In 1968, Valle recorded the LP Viola Enluarada in Brazil with Milton Nascimento . The LP Mustang cor de sangue , which followed in 1969, marks Valles turning away from pure Bossa nova and turning to more modern styles. The instrumental title Azimuth contained on the album was named after the Brazilian trio Azymuth . Paulo Sérgio's texts now became more critical, even if that was not always appreciated, as the blonde Valle brothers, along with their German descent and origin from a better family, were considered elitist.
In the 1970s, Valle worked mainly on soundtracks and jingles for telenovelas . In 1970 the album, only titled Marcos Valle , was released, which is also known as the "Bed Album" because Valle can be seen lying in a bed on the cover. The music on it is far more psychedelic pop and soul than bossa nova. This tendency continues on the following albums Garra (1971), Vento Sul (1972), Previsão do tempo (1973) and Marcos Valle (1974).
Between 1975 and 1980, Valle lived again in the USA. There he worked on albums by Sarah Vaughan and Airto Moreira and began a musical partnership with Leon Ware, who in turn had written songs for Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye . Valles' devotion to black American music was evident in A Paraíba nicht é Chicago , recorded in 1981 and on the album Vontade de rever você : There typical soul and funk sounds like the Hohner Clavinet mix with traditional Brazilian rhythms and Sounds like the accordion. The title means "Paraíba (a state in northeastern Brazil) is not Chicago" in German.
Valle landed a small hit with the disco song Estrelar on the 1983 album, again only titled Marcos Valle . The song Bicicleta , which was released in 1984 and was heavily influenced by the style of the 1980s , also made it into the charts. Nonetheless, the former bossa nova star became quieter; the 1986 album Tempo da gente received little response and remained the last Marcos Valle recording for a long time.
But then the 1990s brought with it a retro wave that suddenly made old Marcos Valle recordings popular again, even in popular discos . Easy listening and electro beats mingled to the Brazilectro. Crickets Sing for Ana Maria in particular became a club hit in Europe from London discos. Valle was pulled out of the blue and has been musically productive again since then. In 1999, Nova Bossa Nova was his first studio recording since 1986 on the British label Far Out Recordings, which specializes in Brazilian music. The album is tailored to the club scene to which Valle made his comeback. It contains danceable rhythms from bossa nova to house; the dominant instrument is the Fender Rhodes piano. Also Escape from 2001 and Contrasts of 2004 hit the same line.
Since then, Valle has been touring Europe regularly, accompanied by his wife Patrícia Alví, who supports him with vocals. The Jet Samba , recorded in 2005, contains new instrumental versions of some of the older compositions. Valle shows himself primarily as a brilliant pianist. Estática from 2010, on the other hand, ties in with the albums from the 1970s and does not skimp on strings and winds. In 2013 a joint album with the American jazz singer Stacey Kent was released with the title Ao Vivo 50 Anos , which alludes to Valles 50-year stage career.
Marcos Valles recorded an album in the USA for the Jazz Is Dead label in 2020 for the first time in 50 years. Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest and the musician Adrian Younge were involved in the self-titled LP .
