Roberto Batalha Menescal (born October 25, 1937 in Vitória ) is a Brazilian musician ( jazz guitar , vocals ) who has emerged primarily as a composer of classic Bossa Nova songs and as a music producer . Well-known compositions like "O Barquinho", "Ah, Se Eu Pudesse", "Errinho à Tôa", "Nós eo Mar", "Rio", "Você" or "Vagamente."

Life

Menescal, who first learned the piano and only switched to guitar in 1954, began his music career in 1957 as the guitarist of Sylvia Telles , with whom he went on a national tour. In 1958 he founded a guitar school with Carlos Lyra in Copacabana (Rio de Janeiro) ; among the students were Nara Leão and Danuza Leão. In the same year he founded the Conjunto Roberto Menescal, one of the first Bossa Nova instrumental groups (including Luís Carlos Vinhas, João Mário, Henrique and Bebeto ). The group accompanied Dorival Caymmi , Vinícius de Moraes , Billy Blanco, Maysa and Telles. In the following year he was involved in the recordings of Garotos da Bossa Nova and took part in the I Festival de Samba Session in Rio de Janeiro (he also performed there in the following years). In 1960 the song "O Barquinho" (which he had written with Ronaldo Bôscoli) was recorded by Maysa as well as by Pery Ribeiro and Paulinho Nogueira. In 1962 he presented himself alongside Tom Jobim and Carlos Lyra at Carnegie Hall , where he also appeared as a singer. Together with Eumir Deodato he accompanied musicians in the programs of TV Rio in the following years. In 1965 he was involved in Paul Winter's album Rio .

Between 1964 and 1968 he worked as an arranger and also as a producer. In 1968 he accompanied Elis Regina on her European tour and stayed in her band for the next two years. Then he became the A&R director of Brazilian Polygram ; as a producer he worked with Caetano Veloso , Gilberto Gil , Jorge Ben Jor , Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia . He was also active as a guitarist and can be heard on recordings by Lúcio Alves, Maysa, Claudette Soares, Nara Leão, Jair Rodrigues and Elis Regina. He also wrote film scores, for example for Bye Bye Brasil by Carlos Diegues (with Chico Buarque ) or for Vai Trabalhar Vagabundo by Hugo Carvana . In 1985 he accompanied Nara Leão on international tours and brought out the joint album Um Cantinho, Um Violão with her . In 1986 he ended his management work for Polygram in order to devote himself to his solo career and to publish several albums under his own name at WEA. In the next few years he appeared in projects by Joe Henderson ; with Wanda Sá he released several albums together. He toured Italy with her, Danilo Caymmi and Marcos Valle . In 2011, he presented the video United Kingdom of Ipanema with Andy Summers . He also owns the Albatroz label .
