Gal Costa (2008)

Gal Costa (actually Maria da Graça Costa Penna Burgos ; born September 26, 1945 , Salvador da Bahía ) is a Brazilian singer .

Life

During her youth, she played guitar and sang at parties.

When she met Caetano Veloso and his sister Maria Bethânia , she organized the music show Nós, por Exemplo ( We for example ) with them and Tom Zé in 1964 . A year later, the troupe went to São Paulo, where they all tried a solo career. Gal's first records were Eu Vim da Bahia ( I came from Bahia , with Gilberto Gil ) and Sim, Foi Você ( yes, it was you , with Caetano Veloso).

In 1966, on the advice of the manager Guilherme Araújo, she changed her stage name from Maria da Graça to Gal. From 1967 it was part of Tropicalismo . She achieved national fame with the hit Divino Maravilhoso ( Wonderful God ) and with the song Baby composed for her by Caetano Veloso .

When Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil had to go into exile in 1969, Gal worked with composers such as Jards Macalé . During the 1970s and 1980s, when the phase of tropicalismo subsided, Gal Costa also swung in a more commercial direction. In 1976 the album Gal Canta Caymmi was created with songs by the famous musician Dorival Caymmi . During the 1980s she worked with Jorge Ben and newcomers like Carlinhos Brown and was considered the greatest singer in popular music in Brazil .

Gal Costa has given experimental concerts in addition to her conventional performances.
