Jorge Ben, 1972

Jorge Ben was a shifter between the main musical currents during the boom of Música Popular Brasileira in the 1960s and early 1970s. First, there was at that time the of Elis Regina presented television program "Fino da Bossa" in which only representatives of Bossa Nova occurred and their artists based in the more affluent areas in the Zona Sul ( Copacabana , Ipanema , Leblon ) of Rio de Janeiro had . In contrast to this, the television program “Jovem Guarda” presented by Erasmo Carlos and Wandalea stood, which was based more on the white lower middle class of the northern areas of Rio de Janeiro. The musical style of this program was based more on the American models of rock'n'roll, blues and soul. As one of the few musicians of his generation, he appeared in both shows. However, this led to a ban on performing at Fino da Bossa, as this was seen at the time as a “betrayal” of the “Brazilian” style of Bossa Nova. As a wanderer between these two directions, together with Bebeto and Trio Mocotó, he became the founder of Samba Rock (this is how it is called in São Paulo ) and Samba Suingue (this is how it is called in Rio), another direction of the MPB .
