Os Mutantes ( Portuguese for The Mutants ) are an influential Brazilian psychedelic rock band that emerged from the Tropicalismo movement in the late 1960s.

history

Os Mutantes, 1969.

Os Mutantes were founded in São Paulo , Brazil in 1966 by the brothers Arnaldo Baptista (bass, keyboards and vocals) and Sérgio Dias (guitar and vocals) and the singer Rita Lee . In 1971 the bassist Liminha and the drummer Dinho officially joined. Together they released 5 albums before Lee left the band in 1972 to start her own solo career. Arnaldo left the band in 1973 due to persistent problems with LSD , followed by Dinho and - a year later - Liminha. Sérgio Dias was the only original member to lead the band until they split up in 1978.

Influence

Although they achieved only limited success in their time, Os Mutantes influenced a large number of Brazilian bands such as Pato Fu and Júpiter Maçã . Furthermore, many contemporary underground and independent bands in the United States and Europe count Os Mutantes among their main influences. Kurt Cobain e.g. B. publicly asked for a reunion tour of the trio in 1993. Beck paid tribute to them with the single Tropicalia on his Mutations album . Talking Heads front man David Byrne took care of the publication and promotion of the back catalog under his own label Luaka Bop . Of Montreal - Frontman Kevin Barnes referred to Os Mutantes several times as his most important musical influence.

2006 reunification

Os Mutantes (Arnaldo, Sérgio and Dinho, without Rita Lee and Liminha - Rita Lee has been replaced by Zélia Duncan as singer) gave their first concert since 1978 as part of the Tropicália exhibition in the Barbican Center in London on May 22, 2006. Further appearances in the Webster Hall in New York , the Hollywood Bowl together with the Flaming Lips in Los Angeles , The Fillmore in San Francisco , Seattle , Denver , at the "Pitchfork Music Festival" in Chicago , and in Miami followed. In 2009, Haih Or Amortecedor was their first studio album in 35 years. In addition, the following year Sérgio Dias founded the band The Lillies together with members of the Tahiti Boy and the Palmtree Family , whose debut album featured guest contributions by Iggy Pop and Jane Birkin .
