The Nerl ( Russian Нерль ) is a river in the European part of Russia. It is a left tributary of the Kljasma , which itself flows over the Oka into the Volga .
description
The Nerl rises in the southwest of the Yaroslavl Oblast near Pereslavl-Zalessky and initially flows in a southerly direction between high hills covered with coniferous and mixed forests. A little north of Lake Pleschcheevo , it turns to the east and soon reaches the borders of the oblasts of Ivanovo and Vladimir .
For a few kilometers the Nerl now roughly follows the course of the border between the oblasts of Ivanovo and Vladimir and then flows through a now more open landscape eastwards through the southwestern Ivanovo oblast. After the confluence of the Uchtoma , its largest tributary, it turns to the southeast and north of the city of Suzdal again reaches the Vladimir Oblast. It passes the city in the east and flows south through open meadow landscapes. A few kilometers further on, it joins the Klyazma near the city of Vladimir .
The Nerl is not navigable over its entire length of 284 km. It usually freezes over in November or December and remains covered with ice until April.
Attractions
In the area where it flows into the Kljasma is the former seat of Prince Andrei Bogoljubski , Bogoljubowo , and the Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary (also called Pokrov Church on the Nerl ), which dates back to the 12th century and is one of the most important Representing monuments of the old Russian architecture.
