Jane Birkin
Jane Mallory Birkin (born December 14, 1946 in London ) is a British actress and singer . She has lived in Brittany near Saint-Pabu since the late 1960s .
family
Birkin is the daughter of Lieutenant-Commander David Birkin and actress Judy Campbell , her brother is the British director and screenwriter Andrew Birkin .
Birkin was the wife of the composer John Barry , from 1969 to 1980 the life companion of the singer, composer, author and director Serge Gainsbourg and later was in a relationship with the director Jacques Doillon . Her daughters Kate Barry (1967-2013), Charlotte Gainsbourg (* 1971) and Lou Doillon (* 1982) came from these relationships.
life and work
Birkin had her international breakthrough in the role of a photo model in Michelangelo Antonioni's cult film Blow Up , which received the Palme d' Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1967 .
She met Serge Gainsbourg while filming Slogan . Together with him, she interpreted the title Je t'aime… moi non plus new, written by Gainsbourg in 1969 , which he originally sung with Brigitte Bardot , but had not published at her request (and that of her then husband Gunter Sachs ). The song was temporarily on the index of some radio stations because some of the program makers and listeners found the text and alleged intercourse noises of the recording to be offensive. The recording probably sold over a million times within a few months and made the couple known internationally.
Gainsbourg and Birkin then produced music solo and together for twelve years. She worked on his album L'histoire de Melody Nelson (1971) and its surrealist film adaptation. Birkin also played in numerous films.
In 1980 she left her longtime partner. Her new partner, the director Jacques Doillon , helped her to a number of important roles during the 1980s that cemented her credibility as a serious actress.
Serge Gainsbourg dedicated his last album, Amours des feintes , to Jane Birkin in 1990 . After Gainsbourg's death in 1991, she decided to end her musical career. Since 1998 she has been publishing her own music recordings again, some with well-known artists such as the violinist Djamel Benyelles , Manu Chao , Brian Molko , Bryan Ferry and Beth Gibbons .
Birkin was guest of honor at the Viennale 2005. In her honor, some of her films were shown during the festival. B. Je t'aime , La Pirate and Daddy Nostalgia .
In March 2006 her album Fictions was released , on which she again worked with contemporary musicians such as Beth Gibbons , Johnny Marr or Rufus Wainwright . The album also features covers by Tom Waits (Alice) , Neil Young (Harvest Moon) and Kate Bush (Mother Stands For Comfort) .
In 2017 she went on tour with her new album Birkin / Gainsbourg le symphonique . In Germany she was a guest at the Ruhr Festival . It was accompanied by a symphony orchestra of around 80 musicians under the direction of the Japanese composer and pianist Nobuyuki Nakajima .

Trivia
"Birkin Bag"
The Parisian fashion house Hermès named a handbag specially designed for Birkin after her in 1984 . Two years earlier, Birkin and the then CEO of Hermès, Jean Louis Dumas, met on a flight from New York to Paris. Birkin, who was carrying an open raffia bag that day, complained to Dumas that the classic Kelly bag from Hermès was beautiful, but much too small. During the flight, Dumas and Birkin began to scribble handbag designs on a napkin. Dumas liked their ideas and after arriving in Paris he gave his designers the order to develop the model. The first collection of the Birkin Bag appeared in 1984.
