Beth Gibbons
Beth Gibbons (born January 4, 1965 in Exeter , Great Britain ) is the singer of the British trip-hop group Portishead , composer and film music composer.
Life
She grew up on a farm with her mother and two sisters. Gibbons liked the tough farming life and, above all, the strong family ties that resulted from it. As a teenager, she preferred to spend the evenings at home with her mother listening to records rather than partying with friends in the nearby town. At the age of 22 she went to Bristol to assert herself as a singer. It was there in 1991 that she met Geoff Barrow , her future partner at Portishead. Together with jazz guitarist Adrian Utley they recorded their first demo and were signed by the music label Go! Beat.
Together with Paul Webb of Talk Talk , Beth Gibbons gained recognition outside of Portishead as "Beth Gibbons and Rustin 'Man". She also wrote a song for Joss Stone's album Mind, Body & Soul .
Beth Gibbons composed the soundtrack for the French film L'Annulaire by Diane Bertrand .
