Roseland NYC Live is a live album from Portishead . It was released in 1998 by Go! Discs and belongs to the genre trip-hop . It is the band's only live album so far.

History of origin

The Roseland Ballroom on 52nd Street in New York

After their second album Portishead from 1997 , named after the band , the band went on tour and decided to record a live album. The majority of the songs were recorded on July 24, 1997 in the Roseland Ballroom in New York , the video consists exclusively of recordings from there. Two songs from other appearances were added to the CD ( Sour Times : April 1, 1998, Warfield Theater, San Francisco ; Roads : July 3, 1998, Quart Festival in Kristiansand , Norway). The band was accompanied by a 35-piece symphony orchestra.

The album consists of eleven tracks, five of which were originally on the style-defining debut album Dummy and six on the successor Portishead .

Publications

The album was first released on November 10, 1998 as a CD and shortly thereafter as a VHS video. A DVD version followed in 2002, on which almost all of the Portishead music videos can also be found.

In the USA the album reached number 155 on the Billboard 200 , in Germany number 58 and in Great Britain number 40.

reception

Allmusic writes that the album is much more overwhelming and indispensable than the average live album ( PNYC is much more compelling and essential than the average live album ). Rolling Stone gave 3½ out of 5 stars, and its readers voted it into the list of the 30 best albums of 1998.
