The National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio (Polish Narodowa Orkiestra Symfoniczna Polskiego Radia ) was founded in Warsaw in 1935 as Wielka Orkiestra Symfoniczna Polskiego Radia . The first director and chief conductor was Grzegorz Fitelberg until 1939 .

history

After the Second World War , the orchestra was re-founded in March 1945 by Witold Rowicki in Katowice . In 1947 Grzegorz Fitelberg took over the management again. After his death in 1953, the orchestra was led by the conductors Jan Krenz , Bohdan Wodiczko , Kazimierz Kord , Tadeusz Strugała , Jerzy Maksymiuk , Stanisław Wisłocki , Jacek Kaspszyk and Antoni Wit (1983-2000). From 2001 to 2007 Gabriel Chmura was chief conductor. From 2009 the orchestra was again directed by Jacek Kaspszyk, Stanisław Skrowaczewski became principal guest conductor, Jan Krenz honorary conductor and Jerzy Semkow took over the artistic supervision of the orchestra.

From 2012 to 2019 Alexander Liebreich was the orchestra's artistic director and chief conductor, making him the first German chief conductor in Poland since 1945. Lawrence Foster has been chief conductor and artistic director of the orchestra since 2019 .

In 2000 Joanna Wnuk-Nazarova was entrusted with the post of General and Program Director . Her successor has been Ewa Bogusz-Moore since 2018.

The seat of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio has been located in the new building in the area of ​​the Cultural Forum of the City of Katowice, on Wojciech Kilar Square No. 1, since October 1st, 2014.

Tours

The orchestra performed in almost every country in Europe , as well as in Japan , Hong Kong , the People's Republic of China , Australia , New Zealand , Korea , Taiwan , the USA , Canada and in countries in South America.

Sound recordings

The orchestra made sound recordings of over 190 CDs for Decca Records , EMI , Philips , Naxos and Chandos . Olivier Messiaen's sound recording "Turangalila" won the 2002 Cannes Classical Award.
