Barbara Hendricks (born November 20, 1948 in Stephens , Ouachita County , Arkansas ) is an American-Swedish soprano. Known as an opera and concert singer, she is committed to human rights. She has lived in Europe since 1977 and in Switzerland since 1985.

Life

Hendricks first attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and earned a bachelor's degree in math and chemistry at the age of 20 . She then studied with the mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel at the Juilliard School and earned a bachelor's degree in music. In 1974 Hendricks made her debut as an opera singer with appearances at the Glyndebourne Festival and the San Francisco Opera . In the course of her career she has performed at the most important opera houses around the world, including the Paris Opera , the Metropolitan Opera , the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and the Teatro alla Scala . In 1998 she sang the role of Liu in the historical performance of Turandot (Puccini) in the Forbidden City in Beijing. Hendricks has appeared in more than 20 games , 12 of which are in recordings. Hendricks made his debut in jazz singing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1994 . Since then she has performed at major jazz festivals around the world. In 2007 she was also seen as an actress in the movie Disengagement by Amos Gitai . In the film music, which is based on Das Lied von der Erde Gustav Mahler and was newly composed by Simon Stockhausen , she took over the vocal parts. In January 2007 Hendricks presented her own record label Arte Verum . With Canciones españolas she released her first CD. After 20 years of tireless efforts to address the concerns of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees , she was made UNHCR's Honorary Ambassador for Life. In 1998 she established a foundation for the prevention of armed conflict.
