Jennie Tourel

Jennie Tourel (born July 9 / June 22,  1900 greg. In Vitebsk , Russian Empire as Jennie Dawidowitsch ; died November 23, 1973 in New York ) was a Russian- American opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ) and singing teacher .

Life

Jennie Tourel first learned to play the flute, but then studied the piano. After the October Revolution , the family left Russia and initially settled near Gdansk , but later moved to Paris , where Jennie Tourel received her first singing lessons.

She made her European operatic debut at the Opéra Russe in Paris in 1931, and sang at the Met since 1937. That year, just before the Germans occupied Paris, she emigrated to the United States via Lisbon . In 1946 she became an American citizen.

Tourel sang Baba in the world premiere of The Rake's Progress in 1951 .
