Ismar Schorsch
Ismar Schorsch (born November 3, 1935 in Hanover ) was the sixth Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in New York , President of the Leo Baeck Institute and is the Rabbi-Herman Abramovitz Professor of Jewish History .
Life
Ismar Schorsch was born in Hanover in 1935 during the National Socialist era as the son of Rabbi Emil Schorsch . His father was arrested during the November pogroms in 1938. After his release from Buchenwald concentration camp , he fled with his family to the United Kingdom and emigrated to the USA in 1940 .
In 1957, Schorsch graduated from Ursinus College in Collegeville , Montgomery County , in the US state of Pennsylvania , a Liberal Arts College .
In 1962 Schorsch was ordained at the JTS . He received his masters from JTS and Columbia University , from which he received an award in Jewish history.
From 1986 to 2006, Ismael Schorsch was Chancellor of the JTS; after retiring from professional life, Arnold Eisen succeeded him.
Ismar and his wife Sally Schorsch have three grown children and eleven grandchildren.
In February 2018 Ismar Schorsch was awarded the Moses Mendelssohn Prize from the city of Dessau-Roßlau.
