Garrick Ohlsson (born April 3, 1948 in Bronxville (New York)) is an American pianist. Ohlsson is the only American to date to have won the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

life and work

Ohlsson began his piano studies at the age of eight with Thomas Tom Lisman at the Westchester Conservatory of Music in New York. At the age of thirteen (1961) he entered the preparatory class of the Juilliard School in New York City as a student, first with Sascha Gorodnitzki and later with Rosina Lhévinne . In his private life he still studied with Olga Barabini and Irma Wolpe . A number of extraordinary piano teachers, including Claudio Arrau, influenced Ohlsson's education very positively in a variety of ways. In 1966 he won the International Busoni Piano Competition in Italy and in 1968 the piano competition in Montreal. He made his New York debut on January 5, 1970. In the same year he won the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. He gained international recognition and built a global career.

Musical work

Garrick Ohlsson has done almost a dozen tours across Poland. He has enjoyed considerable popularity in this country since winning the Chopin Competition. He has performed with major symphony orchestras in Europe, the USA, Japan and also the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra . In the United States he has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Philadelphia Orchestra , the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra . In Europe he had engagements with the Munich Philharmonic , the North German Radio Orchestra , the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra , and all major London orchestras. He played at festivals in Bergen , Prague , Sofia , Dubrovnik , and at the Tivoli Festival Copenhagen .

Chamber music

Garrick Ohlsson is also an avid chamber musician who has worked with the string quartets of the Cleveland Quartet , Emerson String Quartet , Takács Quartet and Tokyo String Quartet , among others . Together with the violinist Jorja Fleezanis and the cellist Michael Grebanier, he is a founding member of the San Francisco-based FOG Trio . From 2005 to 2006 he was on tour with the Takács Quartet.

Sound carrier recordings

Garrick Ohlsson is a prolific artist when it comes to phonograms. He has released works on Arabesque Recordings, RCA Victor Red Seal, Angel Records, Bridge Records, BMG, Delos International, Hänssler Classic, Nonesuch Records, Telarc, EMI Classics and Virgin Classics. His recordings include: Johannes Brahms - Concerto No. 1 ( Klaus Tennstedt / London Philharmonic Orchestra ); Franz Liszt - Concerti and Frédéric Chopin - Solo Works (EMI); Alexander Scriabin - Piano Concerto (Czech Philharmonic Orchestra / Supraphone ). The recording of the complete Beethoven sonatas for Bridge Records includes 8 recordings, the third of which won a Grammy Award for the best instrumental soloist performance. In autumn 2008 the English label Hyperion Records re-released its 16-CD set of the complete Frédéric Chopin work.

Rating

Garrick Ohlsson is one of the best pianists of his generation in terms of interpretation and technology. His interpretations are characterized as quintessentially American. They are technically at the highest level and are free from all romantic manners. Ohlsson has long been considered the world's leading interpreter of Chopin and is now known worldwide for his recordings of Scriabin's works. He has a varied concert repertoire that includes over 80 concerts and ranges from Haydn , Mozart , Beethoven and Franz Schubert to the Romantics and composers of the 21st century.
