Jan Krenz (born July 14, 1926 in Włocławek ; † September 15, 2020 in Katowice ) was a Polish conductor and composer .

Career

During the war, Jan Krenz, born in Włocławek in 1926, took piano lessons from Zbigniew Drzewiecki and composition from Kazimierz Sikorski . From 1945 to 1947 he studied conducting with Kazimierz Wiłkomirski and composition with Kazimierz Sikorski at the State Music Academy in Łódź .

From 1949 he was assistant to the director of the Great Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, Grzegorz Fitelberg , after his death 1953–1968 conductor and director of the orchestra. From 1967 he was principal conductor and from 1968 also artistic director of the Warsaw Opera Theater , 1979–1982 general music director of the city of Bonn and the later Beethoven orchestra . He also directed the Danmarks Radio Orchestra in Copenhagen from 1979–1982 . As a permanent guest conductor, he directed the Hilversum Radio Orchestra from 1983 to 1985 . He often performed with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo. He conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra , the Berlin Philharmonic , the Leningrad Philharmonic and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra . From 2005 and 2008 he was chief conductor of the Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition to his work as a conductor, Jan Krenz also occupied himself with composing. He wrote his first string quartet at the age of seventeen in 1943. Jan Krenz also created film compositions for the films by Andrzej Munk and Andrzej Wajda .
