Bogusław Schaeffer

Bogusław Schaeffer (born June 6, 1929 in Lemberg ; † July 1, 2019 in Salzburg ) was a Polish composer , musicologist , music teacher and author .

Life

Schaeffer first studied violin in Opole and later composition with Artur Malawski at the Cracow State Music Academy . Until 1953 he studied music theory at the Jagiellonian University with Zdzisław Jachimecki . From 1952 to 1957 he was music editor at the Polish Radio in Cracow, after which he taught musicology at the Jagiellonian University from 1954 to 1958.

From 1963 to 1998 Schaeffer was a teacher, from 1989 professor of composition at the Krakow Academy of Music. He also published the magazine Forum Musicum between 1967 and 1973 . In 1986 he received a visiting professorship and in 1989 a full professorship at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, which he held until 2002.

In addition to more than 400 compositions, Schaeffer also wrote books on music theory and history of the 20th century as well as around thirty plays .
