Zdzislaw Jachimecki

Zdzisław Jachimecki (born July 7, 1882 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary ; died October 26, 1953 in Warsaw ) was a Polish musicologist and teacher.

Life

Jachimecki had piano and violin lessons as a child and was active as a choir conductor and composer as a high school student. In 1901 he took courses in music theory at the Conservatory of the Galician Society with Stanisław Niewiadomski and Henryk Jarecki . In 1902 he studied musicology with Guido Adler in Vienna, counterpoint and composition with Hermann Graedener and Arnold Schönberg , philosophy with Friedrich Jodl and Slavic studies with Vatroslav Jagić .

In 1903 his first articles appeared in the Warsaw Echo Muzyczne, Teatralne i Artystyczne , and he published songs based on poems by Adam Asnyk , Lucjan Rydel and Leopold Staff in Cracow . In 1906 he completed his studies with a doctorate on Mikołaj Gomółka with Guido Adler.

He then returned to Krakow and worked for the Przegląd Polski magazine . From 1907 to 1913 he taught music history and composition. He also published articles in the magazines Przegląd Muzyczny and Kwartalnik Muzyczny and in the Sprawozdaniac Krakowskiej Akademii Umiejętności . In 1911 he completed his habilitation at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and was initially a lecturer, and in 1918 professor of musicology. 1932–33 he was dean of the Faculty of Philosophy here. In addition, he gave guest lectures in Rome, Florence, Padua, Bologna, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Budapest.

As part of the Krakow special campaign , he was arrested on Monday, November 6, 1939, by SS-Sturmbannführer Bruno Müller with over 100 professors and deported to Sachsenhausen concentration camp . After a few months he was able to return to Krakow and gave music history and theory underground there. In 1945 he was given another chair at the Jagiellonian University, which he held until his death. He was u. a. awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta .
