Barbara Buczek

Barbara Buczek (born January 9, 1940 in Krakow ; † January 17, 1993 there ) was a Polish composer, pianist and music teacher.

Buczek had her first piano lessons from her father, which she continued at the Kraków Conservatory and from 1959 to 1965 with Ludwik Stefański . From 1969 to 1974 she studied composition with Bogusław Schaeffer at the State Music Academy . In 1984 she took part in the international composers' seminar in Boswil. In 1990 she defended her doctoral thesis on contemporary music and visual arts at the Maria Curie Skłodowska University . She has taught piano, counterpoint and composition at the Krakow Music Academy and has written articles on contemporary music. She received several awards for her compositions, including in 1970 the third prize at the Grzegorz Fitelberg Competition in Katowice for Dwie Impresje , in 1982 the prize at the International Niccolò Paganini Competition in Rome for her violin concerto and in 1985 the third prize at the international composition competition in Vienna for her string quartet "Transgressio".
