Antoni Wit

Antoni Wit (born February 7, 1944 in Cracow ) is a Polish conductor .

Antoni Wit studied conducting at the Krakow Music Academy with Henryk Czyż , composition with Krzysztof Penderecki and law at the Jagiellonian University . He continued his musical training with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He also learned from Stanisław Skrowaczewski and Seiji Ozawa .

In 1967 he began conducting at the Warsaw National Philharmonic as assistant to Witold Rowicki . His international career began with second place at the international Herbert von Karajan competition in Berlin in 1971. First he was artistic director of the Pomeranian Philharmonic Orchestra (1974-77), then director of the Polish Radio and TV Orchestra in Krakow (1977-83), the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (1987-92) and the National Symphonic Orchestra of the Polish Radio (1983-2000). From 2002 to 2013 he was director of the Warsaw National Philharmonic . From 2013 to 2018 he was chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra in Pamplona.

Wit was also a guest conductor with many important orchestras, such as the Berliner Philharmoniker , the Staatskapelle Dresden , the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and the Philharmonia Orchestra . He recorded over 90 albums, most of them for Naxos . He specialized primarily in Polish composers such as Mieczysław Karłowicz , Henryk Mikołaj Górecki , Wojciech Kilar , Krzysztof Meyer , Witold Lutosławski and Krzysztof Penderecki .

From 1998 to 2014 he taught at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.
