Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich
The Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich was founded in 1868. In 1895 it moved to the new Tonhalle , which is considered one of the best concert halls in the world.
orchestra
The orchestra today consists of around a hundred musicians. Countless guest conductors and soloists have made music over the years with the orchestra, which has been a world class for several years; also thanks to the work of its long-time chief conductor and today's honorary conductor David Zinman .
Ilona Schmiel is the artistic director and Lionel Bringuier is the chief conductor until 2018; Paavo Järvi will hold this position and artistic director from the 2019/2020 season .
The orchestra maintains its own orchestra academy: study places for strings are available.

prehistory
The music society "zum Chorherresaal" was founded around 1600, in 1613 the music society "from the music room at the Kornhaus " and in 1679 the one "zum Fraumünster". In 1812 these old Zurich music societies merged to form the “Allgemeine Musikgesellschaft” (AMG). The AMG Orchestra, an orchestra made up of amateurs and professional musicians, had a decisive influence on the city's cultural life.
The AMG orchestra was led by the following chief conductors:
- 1821–1846: Casimir von Blumenthal
- 1846–1852: Franz Abt
- from 1850: Richard Wagner as permanent guest conductor of the orchestra
- 1865–1906: Friedrich Hegar (conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra since it was founded)
