from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Allgemeine Musik-Gesellschaft Zürich (AMG) is an institution for the maintenance of music, which acts as a music organizer and has a large archive of historical music, which is now kept in the music department of the Zurich Central Library.

Since the early 17th century , there were a number of societies in Zurich that dedicated themselves to music or held concerts. AMG emerged from the merger of all these companies in 1812. It took over the library and archive holdings of the older associations and set itself the task of organizing public concerts. Both amateurs and professional musicians took part in the performances. For a while that was Orchestra of AMG at the same time the theater orchestra for opera in Zurich. Throughout its existence, AMG has also appeared as the publisher of a series of publications devoted to musical topics and which still appears regularly in early January under the series title Neujahrsblatt . Among the most well-known members of the society was Hans Georg Nägeli , and Richard Wagner had close ties to AMG during his years in Switzerland.
