Pieter Wispelwey

Pieter Wispelwey (born September 25, 1962 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch cellist . He grew up in Santpoort and moved to Amsterdam when he was 19. He studied there with Dicky Boeke and Anner Bylsma and later with Paul Katz in the USA and William Pleeth in Great Britain.

His first recording in 1990 was the six cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach , for which he was the first cellist ever to be awarded the Dutch Music Prize. Since then he has recorded 20 more CDs, the repertoire includes cello literature from Johann Sebastian Bach to Benjamin Britten .
