William Pleeth

William Pleeth (born January 12, 1916 in London , † April 6, 1999 ) was a British cellist and important cello teacher. He is best known as the teacher of Jacqueline du Pré .

Life

Pleeth was born in London to a Jewish immigrant family from Poland . He showed his talent as a cellist at the age of 7. By the time he was 15 he had already learned all the Bach suites , all the Capricci from Alfredo Piatti and 32 solo concerts , 24 of which he could play by heart. First he studied at the London Cello School and then in Leipzig with Julius Klengel , who also taught Emanuel Feuermann and Gregor Piatigorsky .

Pleeth performed as a soloist with orchestral accompaniment, but preferred chamber music . In 1952 he founded the "Allegri Quartet".

From 1948 to 1978 Pleeth taught as a professor at the Guildhall School of Music in London and was also visiting professor at the Yehudi Menuhin School from 1977 . His students include Kristin von der Goltz , Sebastian Hamann , Sebastian Hess , Jacqueline du Pré , Shauna Rolston , Martin Rummel and Michael Sanderling as well as Anita Lasker-Wallfisch .

His son is the cellist Anthony Pleeth .
