Sebastian Hamann (* 1968 in Hanover ) is a German violinist and conductor .

Life

Hamann was born into a family of musicians. His father was the cellist Gerhard Hamann , professor at the Trossingen University of Music , the actress Evelyn Hamann his aunt. His grandfather was the violinist Bernhard Hamann , concertmaster of the NDR symphony orchestra and founder of the Hamann Quartet . His great-grandfather Johannes Gesterkamp was a violinist and concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic .

He received his first violin lessons in Copenhagen at the age of six. Hamann first completed his studies with Uwe-Martin Haiberg and Winfried Rademacher at the Lübeck University of Music . In the soloist class of Nora Chastain he passed the concert exam with distinction. Hamann received further training from Serge Collot , Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur de Musique de Paris and attended master classes with Emanuel Hurwitz , Henry Meyer , Miriam Fried , Walter Levin , Heinrich Schiff , William Pleeth and the Beaux Arts Trio .

Hamann was a scholarship holder of the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation and in 1994 a scholarship from the German Music Council at the German Music Competition in Bonn. In 1993 he won prizes at the German University Competition and the Possehl Competition and in 1995 at the Gian Battista Viotti Competition in Vercelli / Italy.

In 1989 Hamann became deputy concertmaster of the German Chamber Academy in Neuss. In the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck he became second concertmaster in 1991 and first concertmaster in 1995. From 1998 to 2005 Sebastian Hamann was the first coordinated concertmaster of the Frankfurt Museum Orchestra . Since 2005 he has also been the artistic director of the Camerata Hanseatica in Gdansk. As concertmaster, he worked closely with Thomas Hengelbrock and the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble in 2006 and 2007 . He has been guest concertmaster of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra since 2007. Hamann is the founder and artistic director of camerata lübeck . Hamann has been director of the Lucerne Chamber Orchestra since 2010. His engagements included appearances with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra , the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, the Lucerne Festival Strings , the Philharmonie der Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin , the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra, the Hamburg Philharmonic , the Essen Philharmonic and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne . Hamann has made guest appearances at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, the Biennale du Quatuor - Cité de la Musique in Paris, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, the Rheingau Music Festival , the International Beethoven Festival Bonn , the Maulbronn monastery concerts and the festival in Sion.

In 1992, Hamann began teaching at the Lübeck University of Music and the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . From 2003 to 2007 he was visiting professor for string quartet at the Music Academy of the City of Basel . In 2003 he received a professorship and in 2004 a professorship for violin and chamber music at the Lucerne School of Music . In 2014 Hamann was appointed professor for violin at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg as the successor to Rainer Kussmaul . Sebastian Hamann is a lecturer in master classes and a member of the jury at international music competitions.

He plays an instrument made by the French violin maker Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume from 1853.

Hamann has published CD productions as well as sound recordings in the field of classical music from baroque to modern for the broadcasters NDR , WDR , SWR , ORF and DRS .
