Miriam Fried

Miriam Fried (born September 9, 1946 in Satu Mare ) is an Israeli violinist and music teacher of Romanian origin.

Miriam Fried was born in Romania in 1946. At the age of two she emigrated with her family to Herzliya in Israel. She first learned to play the piano from her mother, a trained piano teacher, but at the age of eight decided to use the violin as an instrument. In her early teens she took violin lessons from Alice Fenyves in Tel-Aviv. She played for Isaac Stern , Nathan Milstein , Yehudi Menuhin and other well-known violinists on the occasion of their visits to Israel and was thus able to broaden her musical horizons. In 1964 she earned her Bachelor of Music at the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv with the aforementioned Alice Fenyves. She continued her studies with her brother Lorand Fenyves in Geneva. With the support of Isaac Stern, she continued her studies with Ivan Galamian at the Juilliard School and with Joseph Gingold at Indiana University.

In 1968 Fried won the International Paganini Competition in Genoa and in 1971 became the first woman to win the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition of Brussels. With these two prizes behind her, she built a remarkable career as a violin soloist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician. Fried is currently the first violinist in the Mendelssohn String Quartet . She often appears in chamber music performances with her son, the pianist Jonathan Biss .

Among other things, she has recorded the complete Bach sonatas and partitas for solo violin on the Lyrinx label . She recorded the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Helsinki Philharmonic under the direction of Okko Kamu for the Finlandia label .

Since 1986 Miriam Fried has been professor of violin at the School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington .
