The Premio Paganini (or Paganini Concore ) is an international violin competition that takes place in the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and is named after the violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini . It was held annually from 1954 to 2002, then every two years until 2010, always in the months of September / October. After an interruption, the last two events took place in February / March 2015 and April 2018.

From 1954 until today, all winners of the competition have the honor of playing Paganini's famous violin Il Cannone (built in 1743 by Giuseppe Guarneri ) at a concert in Genoa. Until 2010, this happened on October 12 as part of the festival in honor of Christopher Columbus .

history

1954 to 1975

The international violin competition Premio Paganini was first held in 1954 under the artistic direction of the musician and composer Luigi Cortese . The aim of the organizers was to create a prestigious international event in Paganini's birthplace and to discover and promote young violin talents. In 1957 the Premio Paganini became a founding member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva .

The competition initially took place at the Conservatorio Niccolò Paganini di Genova , but moved to the Teatro Margherita in 1963 due to the increased public interest, which served as the municipal opera house until the Teatro Carlo Felice was rebuilt. Luigi Cortese was the artistic director of the violin competition for 21 years until 1975. Supported by Carlo Marcello Rietmann, Mario Ruminelli, Lazzaro Maria De Bernardis and Renato De Barbieri, Cortese made a significant contribution to gaining international attention and recognition for the event in the 1950s and 1960s.

Well-known winners of the competition during this period include: György Pauk and Gérard Poulet (both 1956), Salvatore Accardo (1958), Oleh Krysa (1963), Grigori Jefimowitsch Schislin (1967) and Gidon Kremer (1969).

1976 to 1987

In 1976 the conductor Alberto Erede became the new artistic director of the Premio Paganini and the Swiss composer Andrè Francois Marescotti , who was also the president of the World Federation of International Music Competitions , became chairman and long-time member of the competition jury. From 1985, the competition was conducted by Paolo Peloso , who held this position until 1999. From 1982 the competition was also open to the public and found an ever increasing audience.

Well-known violinists of this period include: Lenuta Ciulei-Atanasiu (winner 1976), Ilja Grubert (winner 1977), Wadim Brodsky (2nd prize 1984) and Lü Siqing (1st prize 1987). It is remarkable that the 1st prize of the Premio Paganini was not awarded five times during this period.

1988 to 2002

From 1988 to 2002 the musician and composer Giorgio Ferrari was artistic director of the competition and Giulio Terracini replaced Lazzaro Maria De Bernardis as president. Later, in 1990, this position was filled with Vittorio Sirotti. From 1992 the competition found its new home in the restored Teatro Carlo Felice. The declining age of the contestants is remarkable during this period. In 1999, sixteen-year-old Japanese Sayaka Shoji received first prize in the competition.

Winners during this period included Leonidas Kavakos (1988), Natalia Prischepenko (1990), Massimo Quarta (1991), Julia Krasko (1992), Isabelle Faust (1993), Bin Huang (1994), Giovanni Angeleri (1997) and Ilya Gringolts (1998).

2004 until today

After 2002, the competition was only held every two years until 2010. In 2004 and 2006 Cesare Mazzonis was the artistic director. In 2008 a foundation of the Teatro Carlo Felice took over the organization and implementation of the competition. Cristina Ferrari, artistic director of the Teatro Carlo Felice, has been appointed artistic director of the Premio Paganini . The Russian violinist Zakhar Bron was chairman of the international jury in 2008 and 2010.

The 54th competition took place in February and March 2015 after a long break. The artistic direction was taken over by Fabio Luisi . As an innovation, an international pre-selection of participants was introduced, which took place in October and November 2014 in Genoa, New York, Vienna and Tokyo. Since then, a three-year cycle has been planned.

The 55th competition took place in April 2018. The international preselection was carried out last year in the cities of New York, Vienna, Gouangzhou , Moscow and Genoa. Two months before the start of the competition in Genoa, Fabio Luisi resigned as artistic director due to disagreements over the composition of the jury and protested against the interference of the city's cultural commissioner, Elisa Serafini. Giuseppe Acquaviva stepped in for Luisi as artistic director of the competition.

In the period from 2004 to 2010 the first prize was awarded only once: in 2006 to the Chinese violinist Feng Ning , who was also awarded two special prizes. The success of the German-Japanese violinist Yuki Manuela Janke in 2004, who not only won 2nd prize as the best participant, but also received three special prizes (only the special prize for the youngest finalist went to a younger applicant) was also outstanding. In 2015, the South Korean In Mo Yang won the competition and three special prizes. In 2018, Kevin Zhu from the USA also won first prize and three special prizes.

procedure

participation

Participation in the Premio Paganini is possible for violinists of all nations between the ages of 14 and 30 (as of 2018) after personal application. Since 2015, applicants have had to go through a pre-selection that is carried out in different locations. In September and October 2017, this screening for the 2018 competition took place in stages in the cities of New York, Vienna, Gouangzhou, Moscow and Genoa. The number of participants in the subsequent competition in Genoa was limited to a maximum of 32 each.

Competition rounds

After the international qualifications, the winners will be determined in Genoa in three competition rounds (preliminary round, semi-finals and final).

In the preliminary round, the repertoire to be played since 2015 has consisted of two pieces from the sonatas and partitas for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach and three capricci from Paganini's 24 Capricci op. 1 for solo violin . In the semifinals, the participants have to perform works for violin with piano accompaniment and other Capricci by Paganini (there were two more Capricci in 2015 and three more Capricci in 2018), as well as a contemporary solo piece composed especially for the competition. In the final round, two violin concertos must be interpreted with orchestral accompaniment; one of the two violin concertos always comes from Paganini.

jury

The competition has eight jury members. All jury members are recognized musicians. Usually they are violinists, sometimes composers or conductors.

Prices

Regular prices

The current regulations (2018) provide for three prices: The 1st price is the Premio Paganini . It is currently endowed with 20,000 euros. The 2nd prize is endowed with 10,000 euros, the 3rd prize with 5,000 euros. The 1st prize is not divisible and is only awarded if a minimum number of points is achieved based on the assessment by the jury; the same applies to the 2nd prize. The 3rd prize is awarded in any case, if necessary to several applicants with the same number of points. All other finalists will be rewarded with a payment of 1,500 euros. If the Premio Paganini is awarded to an applicant, that applicant will be the winner of the competition. In addition to the prize, the winner will also have the opportunity to give a concert in Genoa on Paganini's violin Il Cannone and will be invited to numerous music festivals.

In many previous competitions, 6 tiered prizes were awarded (1st to 6th prize). In 1969 and 1974 there was even a 7th prize. In the first competition (1954), however, no prize was awarded. In the next year only the 3rd prize and twice the 4th prize were awarded, in the third competition (1956) twice a 1st prize and twice a 4th prize. At least a second prize was awarded in all subsequent events. Since 2006 only three regular prizes have been advertised, but all finalists receive a prize. For more details, see the list of award winners below.

Special prices

In 1989 a special prize was awarded for the first time, the prize for the youngest finalist. Since then, the number of additional awards has increased. In 2018 six special prizes were announced:

  • Prize in memory of Stefano Fiorilla, endowed with 5000 euros, for the best interpretation of Paganini's Capricci in the semifinals
  • Prize in memory of Dr. Enrico Costa, endowed with 3000 euros, awarded by the Costa family to the youngest finalist
  • Prize of the Association Amici di Paganini , endowed with 2000 euros, for the best Italian participant
  • Prize in memory of Mario Ruminelli, endowed with 1,600 euros, awarded by the Ruminelli family for the best performance by a finalist from the audience's point of view
  • Prize of the Associazione Culturale Musica con le Ali , endowed with 1500 euros, for the best interpretation of the contemporary violin work
(the sponsor of this prize was previously the Associazione Amici Nuovo Carlo Felice and in 2015 the Associazione Amici del Carlo Felice e del Conservatorio N. Paganini )
  • Prize in memory of Renato and Mariangiola De Barbieri, endowed with 1000 euros, awarded by the Associazione Renato e Mariangiola De Barbieri for the best interpretation of a violin concerto by Paganini in the finale

Finalists according to the number of prizes received (from 3 prizes)

Note: The total prices given do not permit direct comparisons, as they are based on different conditions. For example, Giovanni Angeleri won a total of 7 prizes in 4 competitions. Yuki Manuela Janke, In Mo Yang and Kevin Zhu each won 4 prizes, but each in a single competition. On the other hand, the number of special prizes per competition increased over time, from which Janke, Yang and Zhu could benefit. Also, some of the below have received a special award as the youngest finalist, which has more to do with their age than their performance.
