Josef Rissin (* 1944 in Riga ) is a violinist and professor for violin at the Karlsruhe University of Music .

Life

Josef Rissin grew up in Riga and received his first violin lessons at the age of five. In 1953 he was accepted into the "Central Music School Emīla-Dārziņa" at the Riga Conservatory, an institution for particularly gifted children. In 1959 he moved to the Central Music School at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the class of Professor Boris Belenkij , with whom he began his university studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 1962 and graduated in 1969 with a concert exam. During his studies he was already a winner of important international violin competitions, in 1967 at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels and in 1969 and 1974 at the Niccolo Paganini Competition in Genoa. His active concert activities, which he began in 1968 as a soloist with the State Concert Organization in Moscow, took him to the music centers of the former Soviet Union . He has lived in Germany since he emigrated to the West in 1974 and continues to perform internationally as a soloist in recitals and concerts with orchestras, produces radio, television, records and CD recordings and participates in music festivals. Josef Rissin's discovery can be attributed to the avant-garde artist Galina Ustvolskaya, who was previously little known in the West .

Teaching

Since 1976 Josef Rissin has been leading a violin class at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe / University of Music . In 2002 he was also appointed professor for violin at the Zurich University of the Arts . He regularly gives international master class courses in Keshet Eilon and at the Holland Music Sessions and is a member of the jury in national and international violin competitions. Several international award winners, concert soloists, orchestral musicians in leading positions and university professors emerged from his school, such as Albrecht Laurent Breuninger , Sergei Chatschatrjan , Ilian Garnet, Elisso Gogibedaschwili, Koh Gabriel Kameda , Elin Kolev , Maria-Elisabeth Lott , Daniel Lozakovitj, and Linus Roth .

Formations

During his recitals and recordings he is accompanied by the pianist and university professor Olga Rissin-Morenova . The duo Josef and Olga Rissin emerged from studying together in Moscow. In the field of chamber music , he devotes himself to the trio repertoire together with the soloists and university professors Sontraud Speidel (piano) and Martin Ostertag (cello). The Rissin-Ostertag-Speidel trio regularly gives concerts and publishes recordings.

reception

Joachim W. Hartnack characterizes Josef Rissin as an interpreter "whose qualities undoubtedly place him in the top row of the top violinists", and emphasizes him especially because of "his exemplary technical perfection and his profound artistic talent". His concert repertoire includes all the major works of violin literature from the baroque to the modern, including the most difficult virtuoso violin compositions. His cyclical concert performances of all 6 sonatas and partitas for solo violin by JS Bach (1979) as well as the entire violin sonatas by L. v. Beethoven. A large number of concert reviews confirm this assessment. “A phenomenally talented violin artist”, “absolute top class”. "It is not an exaggeration to consider him one of the best violinists in the world."

Publications (selection)

In 1989 Josef Rissin's record was released with works for violin solo by Hindemith , Ysaÿe and Paganini , about which the trade press read: “This record is an asset for every violin fan.” The new edition on CD received the same media response: “This one CD appears to be an absolute 'must' for all violinists. One has to accept the risk that the admission can lead to inferiority complexes in them. "

In 1992 Josef Rissin and Olga Rissin-Morenova performed “great music with a small cast” when they recorded Shostakovich's Sonata for Violin and Piano op. 134 and the Sonata for Violin and Orchestra by Galina Ustvolskaya .

In 2005 Josef Rissin and Olga Rissin-Morenova recorded the CD Fantasien in C , which is dedicated to works by Schumann, Schubert and Milhaud. The press coverage spoke of the "all-round successful recording ... of an exceptional caliber."

In addition to these and other sound carriers, video recordings are becoming increasingly popular.
