The Musikhochschule Lübeck (MHL) is the only music academy in Schleswig-Holstein . The MHL offers doctoral studies in the subjects of musicology, music theory and music education. With the Brahms Institute , the university is affiliated with a musicological institute. The MHL is housed in 22 listed town houses that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

Origin and history

Institutionalized training as a soloist, orchestral musician and music teacher has existed in Lübeck since 1911. Today's music academy goes back to the founding of the piano teacher Marie Luise Kaibel, a granddaughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Kaibel , as a private conservatory.

building

The listed buildings, which have been restored for the university since 1974, are located in an ensemble of 22 merchant and town houses below the St. Petrikirche on the Obertrave and are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . In the Große Petersgrube these are the three classical facades with the house numbers 17 and 19, created by the architect Joseph Christian Lillie for the Lübeck merchant Johann Daniel Jacobj , followed by the baroque facade of the number 21. The facade of the number 23 is an example of the early Rococo from 1730. House no. 25 with its glazed bricks dates from the Gothic period, while houses numbers 27 and 29 facing the street An der Obertrave are examples of classicism . In 1789 the Lübeck non-profit society was founded in house no.

The Lübeck Brahms Institute is located in the classicist Villa Eschenburg , built by the Danish master builder Christian Frederik Hansen , in front of the castle gate .

The corner building with the artistically designed hall and foyer was built around 1990 and was designed by the architect Peter Rix and the German-Swedish color designer Fritz Fuchs. In 2007 the music academy was expanded spatially by the listed Holstentorhalle next to the Holstentor and the salt reservoirs on the other side of the Trave. It houses practice and classrooms, the choir room, a music studio and lecture halls.
