Johannes Servant

Johannes Knecht (born January 15, 1904 in Eßlingen am Neckar ; † May 16, 1990 in Nürtingen ) was a German agricultural economist, agricultural teacher and founding director of the Nürtingen Higher Agricultural School (1949-1967).

Life

Knecht came from a family of teachers, studied agriculture at the Hohenheim University of Applied Sciences , where he received lasting impressions from Friedrich Aereboe . This was followed by several years of practice as an estate official, including in Silesia , then in 1931 the doctorate to Dr. agr. in Hohenheim and work as an agriculture teacher in Herrenberg , Ravensburg , Schwäbisch Gmünd , Vaihingen an der Enz and at the viticulture school in Weinsberg . In addition, Knecht exercised extensive consulting activities, from 1927 to 1933 he gained further experience in the management of farms in Württemberg and Mecklenburg.

From 1936 Knecht worked as a teacher at the agricultural school in Nürtingen. After the Second World War , he built up the agricultural vocational schools in Württemberg. This resulted in the book "The Year of the Young Farmer", which was published in more than 15 editions and over 150,000 copies by Ulmer-Verlag Stuttgart.

In 1949 Knecht was commissioned to found the Nürtingen Higher Agricultural School, which, as a new school facility, was supposed to close a gap between the existing technical schools and university education. Today's University of Economics and Environment emerged from it. He headed this school, appointed professor in 1953, until the end of 1967. During this time, after initially four semesters of training, it was further developed into a six-semester engineering school and finally into a technical college in the early 1970s. During his life, Knecht provided an unusually large number of young farmers in Baden-Württemberg with the business skills.

Johannes Knecht was married and had 2 sons, son Gerhard was u. a. Vice-Rector at the university he founded in Nürtingen
