The Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Economics and Environment ( HfWU ) is a state university (University of Applied Science) with locations in Nürtingen and Geislingen an der Steige , Baden-Württemberg .

history

On November 15, 1949, the HfWU's predecessor institution was founded as the “Higher Agricultural School”. Johannes Knecht was the founding director . With three full-time lecturers and 40 students, a new type of agricultural training was started in the first few years. Under the following director Eduard Nohe , the courses in land care and business administration were established in 1970/71, and in 1972 the educational institution was converted into the Nürtingen University of Applied Sciences by a law of February 6, 1972 . From April 1977 to August 2002 Eduard Mändle was the rector of the Nürtingen University of Applied Sciences. When he retired, he was the longest-serving university rector in the Federal Republic. Klaus Fischer followed him for six years as rector of the HfWU. In September 2007 Werner Ziegler succeeded him as Rector. He was succeeded on September 1, 2013 by Andreas Frey , who came to the HfWU from the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences .

In 1988, the Nürtingen University of Applied Sciences was given a second location in Geislingen an der Steige with courses in automotive, business law, real estate, health and tourism management, and energy and recycling management. There are around 1,800 places available there. With the entry into force of the new State University Act of January 5, 2005, the Senate determined the name “University of Economics and Environment Nürtingen-Geislingen” in the constitution .

In 2009 all activities in the area of "International Finance" were brought together in the European School of Finance (ESF). This includes both the Bachelor's degree in International Financial Management and the Master's degree in International Finance with all teaching and research activities. As part of the Bologna process for the internationalization of degrees, all diploma courses were converted into Bachelor courses. Since November 11, 2015, the economics courses have been bundled in the School of International Finance at HfWU. The SIF replaces the ESF and brings together all courses in finance and business administration. Since 2018, all public events of the SIF have been implemented in cooperation with the HfWU's stock exchange club, the Effekten Parkett. The name for this series of events is SIF MATTERS POWERED BY EP. The motto of the SIF students, "You should be forever questioning!", Which should remind of lifelong learning and being curious. Since February 1, 2020, the SIF has been transferred to the International School of Finance (ISF). The reason was the significant strengthening of internationality and the focus on it. Both the motto and the series of events were retained.

Today, in addition to agriculture, the HfWU also has one of the larger economic science faculties in Baden-Württemberg. On April 24, 2012, the university and its AN institute, the European Institute for Financial Engineering and Derivative Research (EIFD), received the 2011 Education Prize from the Education Foundation. It was about a project that deals with lifelong learning in connection with new teaching methods. It is a sub-project of the Certified Financial Engineer program.

In spring 2019, Wirtschaftswoche named the HfWU one of the best universities in Germany. In the ranking of business administration courses, the HfWU is listed in the top 10.

Since 2012, the HfWU has had a location in Konstanz with the Bodensee Campus and offers the bachelor's degree courses in health and tourism management and sport and event management.

The HfWU maintains contacts to over 100 partner universities worldwide. In addition to the strongly international profile, sustainable teaching and research at the HfWU is particularly important. The university has positioned itself for years, and recognized by politics, as a model university for sustainable development. Another sign of this is that the HfWU has repeatedly received awards for this at federal level.

Integration of the University of Art Therapy (HKT)

On March 21, 2016, the integration contract between the state of Baden-Württemberg , the Foundation for Art and Art Therapy Nürtingen and the HfWU was signed. The courses at the Nürtingen University of Art Therapy (Art Therapy and Theater Therapy) are located in the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Environmental and Urban Planning (FLUS). The existence of the College of Art Therapy ends with the signing of the integration contract. The supporting foundation will continue to exist.
