The University for Communication and Design (HfK + G for short) is a private, state-recognized university for applied sciences. University locations are Stuttgart and Ulm .

The focus is on topics relevant to media and communication from all areas of business and the public sector, as well as the relevant research. The basic structure of the university is made up of the study areas design and communication.

The university is the sole sponsor of the Hochschule für Kommunikation und Gestaltung gGmbH .

history

The educational institution began in October 2014 at the Stuttgart and Ulm locations with the bachelor's degree courses in communication design as well as advertising and market communication. The degree programs offered by HfK + G were accredited by the Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency Hanover ( ZEvA ) in 2013 and have now been re-accredited for a further 5 or 7 years. State recognition by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry for Science, Research and Art was granted in October 2014. On October 25, 2019, the Science Council of the HfK + G did not award the institutional accreditation because it "does not correspond to the scientific standards of a university". Nevertheless, on March 19, 2020, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts extended the state recognition until December 31, 2022 with the condition that a new application to the Science Council to carry out a procedure on institutional by September 1, 2021 Submit accreditation.

Design study area

The courses in the design study area are aimed at creative young people who are capable of design and art. The design study area focuses on design research and visual communication.

  • Illustration, Stuttgart (BA): Techniques of illustration from narrative format to factual and scientific illustrations

Communication department

The courses of study in the field of communication are aimed at young people with interests in the economic aspects of communication. The core research in the communication study area consists of studies of the interdependencies and causes of successful brand management and communication strategies.

  • Advertising and market communication, Stuttgart / Ulm (BA): Marketing and advertising
  • Technical communication and information design, Ulm (BA): Verbalization and visualization of technical information

Basic and dual courses of study

In addition to the basic full-time study programs, the HfK + G also offers dual study programs:

  • Advertising and market communication
  • Communication design

In the dual course of study, students switch between theory in the seminar room and practical training in the respective partner company. In the undergraduate full-time course, students gain practical experience in an integrated practical semester. Both forms of study lead to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in six semesters

In the further expansion, the university is striving to establish master’s courses.

Research Institute for Applied Research (IAF)

In parallel to the establishment of the study areas, the research infrastructure is being further developed with the Institute for Applied Research (IAF). Cooperation and transfer projects take place under the umbrella of the IAF, the content of which can be assigned to the areas of art and design, digitization, image and branding and civic designs / social designs. The IAF includes the Institute for Digital Art and the Institute for Brand and Image Development (under construction).

Institute of digital art / Institute of digital art

The Institute for Digital Art / Institute of Digital Art was founded in Ulm in 2016 with the aim of promoting and networking digital art in a variety of collaborations. The guiding principle of all projects is to inspire students, artists and those interested in art for new artistic forms of expression that result from the use of digital technologies in art and to promote dialogue between the university, artists, students and especially regional companies.

Institute for Brand and Image Development

The Institute for Brand and Image Development is dedicated to investigating the identity, brand and communication of communities and institutions. Research on brand identity, communication, emotion and the function of brand and image in the age of digital media is the focus of the institute's work. It is planned to offer a prize for successful brand introduction from start-up companies.

Locations and technical equipment

The premises at the Stuttgart location are at Kölner Straße 38, the Ulm location is in the so-called Gleisdreieck on the Danube. The technical equipment includes modern digital media technology (multimedia rooms, information and presentation technology). Eye tracking equipment is available for the experimental testing of behavioral processes.
