history

Evangelical University of Freiburg

As a result of the women's movement , which pursued the goal of gender-based professional training in welfare nursing, social women's schools emerged in Germany between the turn of the century and the early 1920s . The distress of the First World War , which particularly affected women who were to be supported by qualified female workers, provided further motivation for their emergence .

In Freiburg, Marie Luise Marschall von Bieberstein , the widow of the politician Adolf Marschall von Bieberstein , as the founder of the “Evangelical Women's Association for Inner Mission in Baden”, promoted the establishment of such an educational institution. On July 16, 1918, the first constituent meeting of the working committee (today's board of trustees ) took place. On October 1, 1918, teaching began under the name Evangelical Women's Vocational School for Church and Social Work with twelve pupils. One year later, one of the two predecessor schools, the Freiburg Women's Social Policy School, was also created, from which the Freiburg Catholic University of Applied Sciences was later to emerge.

The Evangelical Women's Vocational School for Church and Social Work was recognized by the state in 1921 and changed its name to "Evangelical Social Women's School". After Rector Lina Mayer-Kulenkampff, Julie Schenck (* 1895) ran the school from 1923. In 1926 it moved to Goethestrasse 2 , which was soon expanded to include a boarding school. In 1943 the Evangelical Church in Baden took over the sponsorship. In 1945 the teaching company was briefly evacuated to Konstanz and later continued teaching in Goethestrasse.

Schenck ran the school until her death in June 1955 after a serious illness. In the same year there was another name change to "Evangelical Seminary for Welfare and Congregational Service". From 1956 men were also admitted. In 1957 they moved into a new building on the corner of Goethestrasse and Kronenstrasse. From 1968 to 1971 the institution was called "Higher Technical School of the Evangelical Church in Baden". In the course of an amendment to the University Framework Act in 1971, it became the Evangelical University of Applied Sciences for Social Sciences, Religious Education and Community Diakonia . In 1975, a new building designed by the architect Fritz Eberhard was moved into in the west of Freiburg, in the immediate vicinity of the social hotspot district Weingarten . The old premises were given up.

Extension of the university

Since the building designed for 500 students, built and moved into in the 1970s, has become too small, the university was expanded by the Evangelical Regional Church with a new building. The foundation stone was laid on May 8, 2013. It was built according to a design by the architects Lamott & Lamott from Stuttgart. The construction costs of 7.4 million euros for the new building, which opened in October 2014, were borne entirely by the Evangelical Church in Baden. With the expansion, the Evangelical University offers space for around 1,000 students, for research institutes and, above all, for large specialist conferences.

In 2014, the German Science Council decided to reaccredit for a maximum period of ten years. The Science Council particularly appreciated the “convincing range of courses and the strong research orientation of the university”.

Church sponsorship

Church sponsorship means that the university specifically fulfills the mission of the Evangelical Regional Church in Baden to contribute to social education and social design. For teaching, research and further education, this means that reflection in anthropology and ethics and interdisciplinary dialogue in the human and social sciences are particularly important.
