The Freiburg University of Education is one of the six universities of education in Baden-Württemberg , the others are in Karlsruhe , Heidelberg , Ludwigsburg , Weingarten and Schwäbisch Gmünd .
history
The Freiburg University of Education was founded in 1962 from the denominational academies I and II for teacher training. At that time, the university extended over the former Catholic parish church of Littenweiler (first large lecture hall, later canteen), the Musentrakt and a gym. The number of students was around 700.
In 1971 it was declared a scientific university. In 1998 the fifth college building was completed. The sculpture Tilted Cube (1975) by Alf Lechner in the courtyard of the wing became the symbol of the University of Education .
In the 2016/17 winter semester, almost 5,000 students were registered.
In 2018 it became known that the buildings were contaminated with PCBs , especially the ceilings and partition walls of the college buildings. Work to counteract the burden is to begin in autumn 2018. A new building is also to be created as an alternative quarter.
